1965 Dart Voltage Problems

    Im not a "car guy" feel free to use car parts and terms as i can find out what they are, and my father is a car guy if i need that much help.



    Heres the problem.



    My car is running at roughly 12.5 V and draining the battery very quickly, I recently changed the voltage regulator mounted on the firewall. This produced a more stable 12.5 V but now when im speeding my battery is no longer charging.



    A few days prior to replacing the voltage regulator i had installed a new alternator and an analog voltmeter.



    I have seen other post online about newer alternators having voltage regulators installed inside them.



    Could this potentally be a problem if running two voltage regulators.



    Previously i had problems with my coil overheating and melting internally. This was fixed by... replacing the ballist resistor. (well it wasnt i mounted a second coil and i switch between them whenever i cant start the car after stopping for to long (has only happend once since the resistor was replaced))

    You should check to see what the voltyage is coming out of the alternator, and then check the battery to see if theere is any drop in voltage. Try at idle, and at around 3000 rpm. If there is no real change in the voltage, then it has to do with the alternator/regulator. If you charge the battery and it remains at 12.66 volts a day after charging, then the battery is usually fine.



    Yes having two voltage regulators could be a problem.

    First get rid of the extra stuff like the second reg, and second coil, only causeing yourself more problems. Make sure your positive cable isn't shorted and you have that new volt meter wired correctly. Then go see DAD, maybe you can swap computer tricks for car tricks.
