1st Gen mustang gasoline to diesel swap

Yep, I know this is a ridiculous question, but after playing around with gasoline muscle and antique cars, I would like to give diesel a shot for fun, I have a friend who offered to teach me to make my own biodiesel, so i would like to put it to use,

I have a good bit of car experience, so I should be able to tackle the task if i can figure out what i need to do the swap,

Im thinking a 1965-1968 mustang w/ v8 and 4 speed, and for the swap, a ford/international diesel engine, as small as i can find, i think a 6.0 liter is the smallest, there might be a 5.7 or something of that nature.

so the question is, is this in any way doable, would it require a tranny swap, or anything especially drastic when mounting the engine?

would it require a beefier rear end and suspension?

Thanks, and before anyone makes fun of me for being an environmentalist muscle car enthuisiast, I actually dont care about the gas crisis or global warming i just think this would be a really cool, unique car.

Hi, For what it's worth, a freind in Anchorage switched a 454 out of a one-ton GMC to a 3-53 Gmc Diesel. He then switched out the 4 speed for a 5 speed main box and a 3 speed aux. The rear end came out of a used Kenworth, and was modifided to fit. The front suspension was completely redesigned and built from scratch. At the end, he had a one of a kind, GMC pic-up, that cost just under $10,000. He did all of the work himself, and it took over 2 years. Hope this helps. Steve

    wow two years?

thats some serious faith. Im wondering if all of the tranny work he did will be entirely necessary, and im also thinking if so, taking a strong ford automatic, and converting it to manual shift might be good for taking all the extra torque and stress.

I was also thinking, and i know this usually doesn't turn out well, but supercharging the gasoline engine, switching it to fuel injection and actually running it off diesel, this probably wouldnt be too effective though

assuming this would be my course of action, what steps would i take to convert the engine?

    Thanks,

    Steven Sullivan

make sure you do your research on the new diesel motor!! not all power strokes are equal. if you can remember ford had alot of trouble with there motors for a few years, and even now with the new ford "flame thrower" motor. if you dont mind looking at othe manufacturers i would suggest a duramax with a full rbp kit on it. my friend has a dually with this set up and he lights it up thru 2nd and chirps the rest. he beats z06's with a dually!!!

Those motors will be too heavy and big to put in a mustang but there are some 4 cylinder diesels that would work well in that engine compartment. Jeff
