Lost Keys - rekey or...?

hi, new here and have a somewhat basic question. forgive me if i missed the obvious....

i have a '65 Impala that my buddy lost the keys for. I'm told by my local chev dealer the car is too old to order keys and it appears i'd have to cut the ignition out in order to get it out to take it somewhere and have it rekeyed (it won't release despite my best efforts). is there some other magical way to replace lost keys for classic cars? i REALLY don't want to cut into my dashboard!

    thanks.... holly

Any locksmith worth his/her salt can make a key that will work. I would suggest having them pick the lock and remove the cylinder for re-keying to a different code. This way if some actually stole the key without you suspecting it, it won't work for them in the future.

The ignition lock and switch can be removed as a unit and taken to a locksmith for re-keying. (it will save the service call). You may need to show a registration for the car to have the key made or changed, if you don't have an original to duplicate. That will depend upon your state and local laws. (locksmiths are bonded, and will not make a key for a vehicle if it looks like something fishy is going on like making a key to a vehicle in order to steal it or whatever.)

Another possibility is remove your door trim panel and pull the door lock, it will have the key code stamped on it. A locksmith can make a key from that.
