My Buddies 72 C10 Knocking Noise

    My Buddy has a 72 C10. 350 w/th350.

He started it up the other day and heard a loud pop. After opening the hood he noticed small spurts of flames shooting out of the passenger side exhaust headers. After replacing the header gaskets, flames went away, he then heard a noise which he thought was the passenger side valve cover gasket being busted. When I arrived, he cranked it up and It definatly sounded like a knocking sound from the passenger bank. We pulled the passenger valve cover off and he cranked it up and all the rocker arms and push rods seemed to be working fine. We are going to do a compression check on it today. Is there any thing else we could be looking for. I dont think it could be a hydraulic lifter. Do you guys have any ideas?

Gary, if he remembers which exhaust port the flame was coming from, with the valve cover off, loosen the rockers on that cylinder one at a time keeping track of how many turns it was loosened so you can put it back. See if the valve stem comes up higher than the other valves (while in the closed position). If so, he may have broken a valve. Also, is the engine misfiring?
