combustion chamber size

hey guys, i was wondering about combustion chamber size. i'm kinda thinking on changing the heads on my 350, but i don't know if the whole "bigger is better" thing is true. i'm constantly on craigslist cause i've found some outrageous deals there. but one thing that i am always seeing with the cylinder heads is "64cc" and "76cc". what all does this mean? and also when i see 194 what are they referring to?? what kind would you guys recommend for a budget minded builder that wants the most bang for his buck??:confused:

CC's refers to the volume of the combustion chamber. When you see a head upside down, you will notice the dished out area above each cylinder with the valves in each. Well, if you bolt a piece of plex-a-glass over the surface of the head, drill a small hole in the plex-a-glass over the combustion chamber and then slowly fill the chamber with water and keeping track of how many cc's it takes to fill the chamber, that is what cc the head is. 194 refers to the intake valve size. 1.94" and exhaust 1.5" in diameter.

Bigger is not better in the chamber size (it lowers your compression ratio). Bigger can sometimes be better in the valve, camshaft and intake port sizes (usually with reduced mpg and drivability).
I would subscribe to a hotrod type magazine and start reading the engine articles in detail or buy a how to book before you jump in.

thanks man. well i'm not so new to engines but to chevy and gm products. i'm a ford guy that traded for a chevy. thanks for the info and i was attempting to see if cartech had a book on sbc's but i never saw one on their websight. thanks again man

so now that i understand chevy heads alittle better, i am thinking of going to roller rockers. but i keep seeing this 1.5 and 1.6. what is that refering to??

It's the ratio of the rocker. Stock is 1.5. The 1.6 opens the valve a little farther.
