I think all you should have is a wire running from the ignition switch to the coil and another wire from the other side of the coil to the distributor. Disconnect the wire from the ignition switch and with the points in the distributor held open, check the wire for continuity to ground. If it is grounded, you will have to then trace it to see if it has been chaffed and touching the body.

One of the old cloth wrapped wires had a bare spot. Now I've cleaned up on the carb, and it runs sort of. Hoping its not a stuck valve. Any ideas, you've been a big help so far ?

"Runs sort of" is not a desciption that I can help diagnose.

Give more information and possibly someone can help.

    Glad you found your answer.

The car wont hardly idle, it runs ok at mid-range, then running at high speed it starts running rough; does lightly backfire thru carb. Car does have a new coil, and the carb top was removed with the nozzles rodded out, and the old gas flushed out, then reassembled. This was not a complete overhaul.

I would say that the first thing you need to do is put a vacumn gauge on it and see what it does.

Generally a backfire in the carb is, to lean a condition or an intake valve that hangs open periodically.

The thing to remember is that you need to diagnose the entire problem before you start throwing parts at it. Only replace parts after you have verified that what you are replacing is bad.

    Keep us posted

A few simple things would be to replace the plugs if their old and get new wires. Are you sure the mixture is adjusted right? On my Model A, I have to make the mixture a little more rich when it gets down into the 50s-60s, otherwise it doesn't run very strong and idles a bit rough.

Purrs like a kitten now. I checked the carb again, saw that the jets didnt have a good spray pattern, so I took the carb completely down and cleaned. When I put it back together I filled the carb with cleaner from the filter on top of float, and let it sit until I got my work area straightened. Then went to the starting process, took a few minutes to really catch, but it tried to cough to life on first tries. Running really smooth now, so that now I can really be able to tune it up.

    Thanks for input.

The purpose for getting it running again is to sell it, to many projects for daddy to handle now.
