part cross list number for a vacuum advance --54 Twin-H?
-
I think the Autolite part number was 2023 R or 2023RG, I would have to check the box that it came in, next time I am at my friend's place, that is, if he kept the box. It came without the vacuum pipe fitting or springs, shims......I had to transfer them and check the vacuum advance in degrees for Inches of Hg vacuum as given in the Hudson Mechanical Procedures book.

For those who are not having any luck with finding a replacement vacuum advance chamber you can have them rebuilt. Today I spoke with Al Saffrahn, well known Hudson mechanical wizard, about available Hudson applicable replacement vacuum chambers and he surprised me stating; he is now having OEM canisters rebuilt with modern diaghram materials. Note he does not stock these items and sends them out to a repair shop. Contact Al @ (five-two-zero) Twentynine eleven or AZal_saffrahn@q.com. Remove the AZ from the email address. You will need a core chamber to effect the repair.
Hudson used IAT2023RD vacuum chambers for 232 and 262 engines and the IAT2023RN for the 308. The amount of inital advance is identified on the chamber arm. The attached picture is of an arm on a IAT2023LE and it is marked "5". Hornet engines (308) will be marked "3.5".
Hope this will help .... if you drive your Hudson and have a non functioning vacuum chamber, you will see a measurable increase in mileage with a properly functioning vacuum advance.

Do you still need a vacuum advance with pertronics? Thanks for a reply. Barry

Yes, the vacuum advance would still apply as the function of the vacuum advance is to advance ignition timing at part throttle/cruising speeds for better fuel mileage. Contrary to some peoples thinking it does not advance the timing under acceleration. It retards ---when you accelerate the vacuum decreases and the timing retards, other wise the engine would would 'spark knock' from too much timing.
In a modern day vehicle among other parameters the function of a knock sensor is when it senses vibration caused by 'spark knock' is to 'tell' the the computer to retard timing to prevent 'spark knock'

No other spark advance has the same total as Hudson. I modified a 1972 AMC electronic distributor to use in my Hudson and had to make sure it only gave 9 degree centrifugal advance and 4 degrees vacuum advance. Original they are 16 and 12. Took 3 days on a SUN MACHINE to get my setting. I got better gas mileage and power. I use a jacob brain box with it. Fully Automatic and had to get KJB plugs as Champion would burn away. Walt.

What distributor are you using? Will not work on a Hudson distributor. I meant to say 1982 but 7 got in the way. The best part on my AMC distributor, it takes all Ford parts and they are still available, Motorcraft. After 100,000 miles I bought a Ford distributor, rebuilt, and just changed all parts inside from one to the other. Only cost $42.00. Let me know the distributor you are using? Walt.

This looks like it may, with a little work, be made to work with our Autolite distributors. It's a replacement canister for their billet big block Mopar distributor. Don't take my word though, just thought I would throw it out there...
