Is Charlie Wallace selling his 54 Hornet Hollywood?
-
Found this: http://www.reachoo.com/ads/101698196
No description, no contact info, just pictures.....Strange. wonder if it is/ was a fraud attempt?
-
Ken,
This was posted on San Diego Craigslist on Jan 29 http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/cto/3580049215.html . -
Yes, Charlie has his '54 Hornet Hollywood up for sale!
-
Why is Charlie letting it go? Does it have issues? I heard it only gets 13 MPG with the Tri-Weber setup. I also heard it prefers premium gas........At $5 a gallon in Californy, and only 13 mpg, I guess it is expensive to operate.
-
I like this part--
:)car runs 190 -
He has it highly "souped up" = poor mileage, + Hollywoods a lot heavier than a sedan or coupe!
-
Selling it as I have too many cars and too many BILLS! The 190 is missing the degree part.
If anyone interested, call me. Number in CL ad above -
Charlie, in all seriousness, it does look like a really nice Hdtp. I bet it is fun to drive!
-
I think the Webers can be rejetted for better mileage, with the help of an exhaust gas analyzer and a competent carb specialist. I think they may be a bit on the rich side. Also, the distributor, I think Charlie said it was a modified Slant Six electronic distributor. Might want to check that the centrifugal and vacuum advance are within specs and functioning correctly. He said something about it not liking 87 OCT gas, could be the total advance curve going a bit too far, too soon, to cause the issue (pinging?). With the lock up torque converter 700R4 overdrive automatic, it should be getting at least 16-17 mpg. Don't get me wrong, I am not criticizing the car, I like it, but I think with a little tweaking, the gas mileage and premium fuel affinity issues can be addressed. 8.5 :1 compression is not all that bad, and 87 OCT gas is higher than what they used back in the 50's. This is something for Walt Mordenti to chime in on....
-
Ken, I agree. From the picture it appears that the vacuum is not run to the advance canister on the distributor. I have made the same change to my 308 using the slant 6 body, Hudson mechanical weights, and MoPar vac advance. I set both the vac and mechanical advance on a distributor machine. An allen wrench down the vacuum tube nipple will bring the advance into Hudson specs. Bruce

Engine was set up on dyno, all of your issues addressed then. Car will get 16mpg but you have to drive it like an old lady. 87 octane gas in California like cat piss.
-
And probably smells the same as well. He he
-
that's tell em Charlie, LOL
-
The Craigslist posting had expired, and the other one only had 4 photos, none of the engine compartment. Would sure love to see a picture of that Weber setup-

Here's the pic taken from the other ad:

webers are also sensitive to fuel pressure (need only 3.5lbs). The floats have to be set correctly also as that can cause a change in jetting/ running if they are too high/ low. Running too large a main jet, too small a air jet or too small a venturi (choke) will cause excessive gas consumption by making the main circuit come on too early. The webers would actually be more fuel effiecent than the stock carb as each cylinder would be metered individually unless you drive WOT like Walt does :).
One issue with webers is that the idle jets can get clogged easily causing one cylinder or more to pop and fuss until about 2300 rpm. Idle jets can get clogged with chucnks in gas as well as air filters not sealing really well.
also running an ITB setup would benefit running a vacuum box tied to all intake cylinders assuring a good signal. The dist vac advance should also be setup with webers (ITB) as the signal would differ from a stock intake I do believe.
my .02. Nice car, the weber DCOE setup on thier is slick. If it was setup on the dyno, what are the hp/ tq numbers? The ad is down, forgive me if these questons were answered.
