Aren't Studebakers worth discussing?
-
Hi There,
I own multiple Studebakers, 1929 President, 1951 Starlite Coupe, !951 Business Coupe, and a 1959 1/2 ton Pickup. I also own several Hudsons and frequent the Hudson forum nightly. The Hudson forum gets 10-30 posts per day and this forum hasn't had a post since January, aren't Studebakers worth talking about. Is there anyone out there with anything to say about Studes, no one who needs help or information?
John -
Everyone uses the Studebaker Newsgroup - it gets quite a bit of traffic.
-
Yeah, I shoot my mouth off once in a while over here, too. BUT I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL, Rustjunkey. I posted stuff on the Kaiser-Frazer forum looking for help, too; and it's like, what--do I cyber-stink or something?!? Where IS everybody?? All these posts and now it's dead. Ah. You know what it is; it's spring. Everybody's busy getting their cars ready; they haven't time to diddle around in front of the tube. That's gotta be it. I hope."Problems are merely opportunities in workclothes." -Henry J. Kaiser
-
I have a vareity of vehicles and frequent the Hudson site daily where they get at least fifteen or more new posts a day. Always something new going on. What type or years of Kaisers do you have?

I am a Hudson and Studebaker guy and have only been on this part of the site twice, this is number 2. The Hudson action is definitely here, but the Studebaker guys are either on the alt.autos.studebaker newsgroup or the Studebaker Drivers Club Forum:
http://www.studebakerdriversclub.com/sdc_forum/default.asp?CAT_ID=1 That is where I would check. -
Hey Dan,
What type of Studes Do you have?
John -
Rustjunkey: I have a 1954 Kaiser Manhattan. I put a post out on the K-F forum trying to trace an outfit that converted six-volt regulators over to solid state without changing the outer appearance. I am going to re-post it on the Hudson forum, at the suggestion of the one reply I just got, due to the heavier traffic on that forum."Problems are merely opportunities in workclothes." -Henry J. Kaiser
-
Well Rustjunkey, I have two '64 GT's one an R1 Powershift and the other an R2 4sp full package car. I also have a '58 pickup that I am streetrodding with a turbo charged R2 engine, a '55 2 Ton flatbed and that is enough for now before my wife scalps me!
-
Dan,
I understand, my two ex-wives told me it was either the cars or them and I told them I was going to miss them. I have a 29 President, a 51 Champion Business coupe, a 51 Starlite coupe, and a 59 4E3 Short bed p/u with the 245 6 cyl 3 spd OD in Studies that is. I like Avantis and will pick one up someday as well as a Loewy coupe.

well I'm new here... pre prepping to start ( does that sound like some time in the next decade ...LOL... ) restoring my 36 Stude Pick Up ... I'd take all the helpful hints I can get...
-
Dan, don't buy that stuff about rustjunkey having all those Studebakers. The truth is that he wants to cover everything he has with Kudzu and let people guess what he has. I happen to know that he is currently planning on covering California with his diabolical plan for having stealth antique cars. No one can see them because they blend into the scenery. He's a pretty sharp operator.
-
I like Studebakers and have owened 4 and one of them twice. I bought it back afer about 14 years and am working on it daily. The people I sold it to did not take care of it and left it set out and the paint ruined and the headliner and the brakes set up and I am repairing all of these things.

My partner in crime! I just checked this thread and found you are exposing my plan to corner the Western Antique and Vintage car market through the use of Kudzu. It will never work unless we keep it quiet! The vehicle owners will start buying Kudzu eating sheep before we can implement the plan!
Rustjunkey -
Well, Hi Stude guys, I am a Hudsonite and there is a 60 Lark Convertible in the garage. It belongs to my wife, who loves Studebakers, "Oh they're so cute!"
This Lark is her second Studebaker, the previous was a 56 Golden Hawk! She buys her collector cars, gas and parts with her own $$. How about that!

Tell us more about your '36....
The first year for a production pickup from Stude was '37.
But I have seen pic's of some pre-production design studies, so I know not to ever say never...

I'm a Hudson guy but I like Studebakers, I've never owned one. I check this site out and also notice few Stude posts, but this is even worse: I recently bought a project 1925 Overland, joined the club and everyone is super helpful, but I wish there were a forum like the Hudson one. I posted one thread on the flathead forum but no response yet. I do think that the 1937 Studebaker is one of the most beautiful cars ever built. Wish I could afford one.
-
I own a 1950 studebaker Champion Coupe. I think it is a work of art. They are worth discussing, but not so much on this forum. Studebaker Club is where I talk. When I take my Coupe to the car shows, People always stop and tell me how much they like my car and it is good to see something else besides a Chev or Ford. I'm trying at this point to buy a Hudson or a Essex.
To me the cars of the 30' and 50' are some of the best cars around.
Jeff -
I'll add some rememberances I have of Studebakers. Besides the everyday studebeker drivers growing up, there was one Avanti I saw on a road course in a stock car race somewhere around Indianapolis, In., when I was stationed there in early 1965.
The stock car drivers I remember in the race with the Studebaker Avanti were some of the best stock drivers at that time. Dan Gurney and Richard Petty are two I remember in the race. Dan Gurney was a wild man, he spun out 2 or 3 times where I was sitting, and Richard Petty drove so smoothly you would think he was out for a Sunday afternoon drive.
How did the Avanti do? Bad and good.
The bad part was, the Avanti was way out performed. Cars were passing him like he was standing still. It looked like the other cars were 30 - 40 mph faster on the straitaway, and they easily pasted it in the turns.
The good news is: because there were only 10 cars still running at the end of the race, the Avanti came in 10th. I have no idea who won the race.
However, at the El Mirage dry lakes races, a few years ago, I was impressed with a very good looking stock appearing Avanti. It's top speed was 178 mph. He told me before a rule change his speed was in the 190's. It was supercharged, with a big cooler tank where the passenger seat would have been. The thing about the engine, that blew my mind, was the most restrictive stock exhaust manifold I had ever seen, was still on the motor.
There were many stock studebaker and gassers that did very well in the 1/4 mile drag race wars. Some are still competing today at local tracks around the country. I'm sure there will be some at the big, Bakersfield, Ca. March Meet next month.
Hope more people will share their Studebaker stories and knowledge on this forum. I don't want to still see this as the last post next week.
You all have a good day. Lee -
Sorry Rustjunkey, I have nothing to add at the moment. I sold my 1955 President coupe last year (and bought a 1937 Hudson Terraplane...) Don't despair, we still have three Studes in the barn! :D
-
I own a '34 Terraplane convertible and a '53 Stude Commander coupe. Stude club has a dedicated forum of its own elsewhere so that is where they post. Hudson guys use this one. Really pretty simple isn't it fellas?

MY YOUTH WAS SPENT IN THE BACK SEAT OF MY BUDDYS 60 STUDE CV HE WRECKED ONE NIGHT BACK IN 68 IT'S STILL SETTING IN A LOCAL GARAGE IT MIGHT BE A HOOT TO GO SEE IT. I THINK IT WAS JUST THE FRONT CLIP THAT GOT BENT UP THE BRAKES WENT TO THE FLOOR AND THEN BANG!!!!! WE DID A LOT OF BUBBLE DATES IN THAT CAR MY WIFE STEFI WAS THERE ALSO AND REMEMBERS IT WELL ALSO. WE HAD GREAT TIMES ONE NIGHT OUT WITH MY BUDDY DRIVING HIS STUDE AND THE NEXT NIGHT ME DRIVING MY 57 HUDSON OHHH THOSE WERE THE DAYS :) :) :) :) THE SMILES ARE FOR THE 4 OF US
-
my 1st car a '48 Stude. Champ conv., totally gutless, LOL.
2nd car a '49 S6 cp.
my 3rd car a '53 Comm. V8 hardtop, bought from original owner in South Bend, drove it to Az. to college for several years.
my 1st job out of college was working for Newman-Altman in South Bend who also owned Standard Surplus, THE source of NOS Stude. parts for a long time.
One of my best friends was one Daryl Dye who was one of the main gurus & proponents of the great pre-war President 8s; when he died he had several. Both he & his father were Stude. employees. He was trained as an Avanti specialist & after completing the factory school was sent out to big Stude. dealer in Santa Monica - that dealership sold more Avantis than any other & that's where I met him, became life-long friends.
I used to belong to the Stude. Driver's Club, had a pr. of '55 Speedsters & several Lark wagons.
My wife & I bought a '62 GT Hawk as a wedding present for ourselves, LOL. White with 4 speed & red interior, great car!!!!
Comparatively, at least to me, the Stude. V8 a better engine than the Hudson's flat head 6s, but bodies & overall quality of the car far inferior, post-war (Daryl had an incredible original '41 President 8 sedan which we drove around in on several occasions, a superior car to a '41 Commodore 8 of which I've had several).
Have lots of other Stude. stories, esp. about when I work at Newman-Altman but this "ain't the place" so to say ~ -
just remembered the name of the dealership in Santa Monica, Simonson-Schatmeyer (last name spelling might be wrong); they had been a major Packard dealership in the L.A. area.
We didn't buy the '62 GT Hawk from S-S but lived in Santa Monica so had it serviced there; wanting to see who they'd have working on my new Hawk went back into the service area (which one can no longer do) expecting to find an old Packard coot molesting it BUT to my surprise, a guy younger than me, Daryl! I got him into Hudsons, he had a stepdown conv. at one time. He moved near me much later, in Woodland Hills, so practically neighbors until I retired & left L.A. area; he died a few years later, age 57! I really took it badly. As you can tell I still think of him~ -
Take a look at the date of the initial post - this thread is almost 7 years old... Prior to Joyce's post, the last post was 3 years ago.
Yep, some of these threads are 'long in the tooth' - LOL! :)) -
46, and so are most of us, LOL
-
...and so are ALL the cars we are mentioning so it would seem the "threads" of old cars owned by old men and old events relative to them weave together until what we have from these threads is a "cloth" and we call that the old car hobby I do believe......
