Gas Tank Cushion Material

    I am planing on installing the gas tank in my stepdown soon, and was wondering what replacement material anyone has used to replace the original material that the factory used as a cushion between the gas tank and the car body. I have the original 2 pieces (one for each side), but they are a little stiff and encrusted with dirt. I'm afraid they would fall apart if I tried to remove some of the crud on them.

    Also, I was wondering if there was any material that was used by the factory between the straps and the gas tank. I don't recall seeing anything when I removed the gas tank (long ago), but another car that I am restoring ('53 Buick Skylark) does have a thin strip of fabric material that fits between the gas tank and the straps.

    I used black paper above the gas tank and cut strips out of 1/8" rubber to go between straps and tank.

    I used closed cell foam about 1/4-3/8" thick between tank and trunk floor. There was nothing between the straps and the tank originally.

    The original stuff was like modern very heavy roofing felt paper ,with maybe a little highrer tar content. About 1/4 inch thick ,

    That is what I used when I did my Hornet. Heavy duty tar paper above the tank and on the straps. Must remember you need to now ground your tank, a wire from the frame and to one screw that goes to the gas tank gauge. Walt

    I have taken tank out with it on the bottom of the straps where it contacts the tank . As walt says need to graound tank . I cant see how the guage ever worked insulated from the car like that but it mist have got ground someplace,

    Thanks everyone for the input. After reading all the comments, I think I will use either tar paper or closed cell foam for the top, and rubber on the straps. Also, glad I was reminded about the grounding strap, otherwise I probably would have forgotten!
