Hi all,
Today I had a chance to look at my engine with some friends for a little bit and we uncovered the engine block number under a good amount of dirt. I would have taken a picture, but it was too dark outside.
My VIN: 492XXXXXX
Engine Block number: 301766_2 (there is a number worn away) with 75 17 49\ below it.

Take a closer look at that block number, I think it may be 501766?2, which would be from a 1950 Super Six. The significance of the other numbers is not known to me as they are not a factory number. Other possibility it is 301766 which would be a 1954 number, but would have a 4D, 5D, 6D,or 7D before it, normally.

The 301766 appears to be the casting (part) number for the head- at least, that's what you're showing in the picture. 5 17 49 sure sounds like the date the head was cast, which would make it a /49. The block number should be stamped on a machined flat spot on the front of the block (not the head), can't remember if it on the left or right side of the front of the block.

Thank you Ken and Mike! When I pull the engine (hopefully tomorrow) I'll see if I can find another number stamped onto the front of the block.

Ahh, you are looking at the casting number of the head. The serial number is stamped, not cast into the block. The serial number is on the right front side of the block, just under the #1 exhaust port. The numbers are arranged vertically along the front edge of the block under that exhaust port,

Engine number on boss on block as Ken suggests. Should match vin of car if original.

Engine number is on the side of the block at the top front, just ahead of the front end of the exhaust manifold.

There usually is a casting number on the drivers side of the block above the pan flange that will give the casting date. For example : 11 4 48 which would be Nov 4th of 1948. Then you can figure a time lag between casting and then further machine work and assembly into a car.. In this case definitely a 1949 model car. That will not tell you if that engine came in your car from the factory, but will give you the manufacture date. This with the vin number stamped on the right front where Park shows you, will give you confirmation. By the way, the eight cylinder number is stamped on the top block surface in the same right front corner.

I checked by the first exhaust port and it is 492XXXXXX which matches my vin.

Here's another fact you can dazzle your friends with - your car was built in June 1949 (s/n's 112912 thru 124248) and there were 11,337 cars built that month. The break out for 1949 was 91,333 Super Six's, 6,365 Commodore Six's, 32,715 Super Eights and 28,687 Commodore 8's.
There were 159,100 cars produced of which 144,685 were shipped.

So, @hudsontech going a little off topic from the break out of the 1949 production numbers would it be somewhat easier to find a 49' Hudson Super Six Brougham compared to a 49' Hudson Commodore Six Club Coupe?
Also if you are wondering I am looking for both, just in no hurry currently, gotta get a two Hudsons back on the road first. :D
