Help. Re-babbiting Connecting Rods
-
Hi there. After pulling the engine out of the '37 Terraplane and waiting for a decision on the inserts vs re-babbiting, turns out I am forced to do the latter. Looking for suggestions as to the best place to get the work done.
-
What part of the country do you live? Maybe someone in your region or local chapter can suggest a shop close to home that can do the job for you.
Gene. -
Just south of Buffalo, NY. Egge was suggested by my machine shop with a three month turn around time...maybe...
-
Seem's like 21st Century Hudson does that (Randy Maas), may be wrong wont hurt to ask
RogerRetired Tech. -
Egge machine also do them.If you're stuck in a hole, stop digging.
-
I think Randy Maas will get them done for you too.

Just wondering if anyone has had experience with these guys?

More from the AACA"Paul's Rod and Bearing in Missouri. They've done several engines for us."Hart's Machine Shop, Cecil, Ohio
They do superb work and have a speedy turn around time.
Good luck! -
I would stay away from Egge. I had a bad experience with them.

@ PAULARGETYPE - the engine is out and at a local machine shop for rebuild. If you could give me measurements for the ones you have in stock I can put a call into the shop to measure the ones they pulled. Thx.
-
Regarding NOS rods: assuming that Joyce could obtain some NOS babbited rods, would she not want to have the machine shop balance them as Hudson had done originally, for a smooth running engine? Didn't Hudson weight the rods and make sure each one weighed the same as the others by grinding off metal?

This is an example

Centrifuged is the best way. Eliminates porosity, and granular structure is more dense for better wearing characteristics. If you can find someone that can centrifuge them, and they know their stuff, go for it. Worth the wait and extra cost in my opinion. Having to redo one bad cast babbitt job will cost more than one properly done centrifuge job.
-
@ Geoff and Ken - I am going to investigate this option.
-
I'LL MEASURE THEM TODAY WILL POST BACK!!
-
@ Paulargetype, thanks so much. I am checking all my options but NOS is certainly appealing .

This guy has been in business for decades. He's done Hudsons all the way from a '13 6-54 up to late 8's.
Vic Terell in Escondido, Cal. (my old stomping grounds), at 760-749-9663, call only on Mon., Tues., & Wed. There's also a great shop in town for grinding cranks & line boring too as well as a body & paint shop that specializes in doing vintage iron. -
@ Geoff - going with Karr in Montana. Hubby talked with the guy and he seems very knowledgeable. Turnaround in three weeks (hopefully...) The machine shop also spoke with him and were happy with what he had to say on the subject. :-bd

Let us know how it goes. capable shops are getting scarce!

Joyce:
Here is another re-babbitter, given to me by a local old-car garage. But the garage owner has no experience with the fellow, merely word of mouth:

harkin did a set of rods for me and they weren't center bored, I won't use them again.
