Radiator hoses

    Who are the vendors that I can get stepdown 308 radiator hoses from? I want the 3 piece lower hose especially. I also need original type hose clamps.

    Chris, FYI those clamps are known as Sherman type clamps. Brownie, the lower hose had a steel elbow with a slight bend in it between two straight sections of hose.

    Hi Chris
    For the upper radiator hose I took the old hose to parts store to match it with what they had and bought Gates P/N 20121 which was a close match for my 52 Hornet. Cut off part of one end because it was to long. I don't remember what I cut up to fit both ends of the lower pipe.

    Hudzilla, Id like to buy enough clamps for two 54's, I think you also offer twin H throttle springs that Id like to get if possible.. How do we do business and what else do you have that I cant live without?

    Russell, thats fine happy to hear from you. Chris I don't have the Sherman clamps . I think Restoration Specialties in Winber ,Pa carries those. I do have the twin H throttle springs. They're NORS. Just PM me. As far as what I have that you can live without well lets put it this way ,I've got a bunch of Hudson stuff so you just never know. lol.

    Just ran out and took these photo's and my car only shows two hoses and I would expect from what you folks are saying that these are not what the originals would look like. Any thoughts? Photos?

    No, those are not original, those are AARRGH! generic 'fits all' hoses. Originals were one hose for the upper and the three piece for the lower. TIP, you can purchaser a hose, Dayco part # E70636 (Advance Auto Parts) or other supplier. This hose work perfect to make both hoses. place lower hose along new hose, mark and cut precisely then the remainder can be used for the upper -- may have to be trimmed slightly. I used this hose on my Pacemaker. I work at Advance, went in with both of my hoses,went back to the hose section figuring I would be there for awhile trying to find a couple of hose to use. Lo and behold within about five minutes I spied this hose, layed both my hoses up against the new one and it was perfect. A word of caution, cut the lower first as I ruined one hose by cutting the upper first and then the lower was to short.

    Just remember, the lower hose has to have a stainless coil spring inside to prevent the hose from sucking together at highway speeds. A lot of Hudsons are heating up because of this. That is why the 2 piece lower hose with the steel piece is better. Walt.

    I believe that Dave Kostansec (sorry about the spelling) may still have the lower hose - the 3 piece, 2 rubber and 1 stainless available. Give him a call. Bruce

    You are right Bruce, I called Dave this morning and ordered two of them. He said he use to have the correct clamps but cant get them anymore.

    What do the original clamps look like? were they the wire type? Or the flat band with a captive square nut?

    I'm pretty sure they are the band type (slotted in the center) and have the machine screw and square nut

    Walt's point about the lower 3 piece hose is well taken. I have been running my Pacemaker with a regular hose with no spring in it for 25 years including the 330 mile trip on way to and back from Gettysburg. It has always run with the temp gauge at the midpoint on the gauge plus or minus a bit depending on the outside temp. If i go back to the hose selection at my job it's amazing how many lower hose no longer have a spring in them..
    Also note that my car has headers and the exhaust temp measures out at around 350 degrees @ the header pipes so that adds addition heat under the hood. I also have the factory thermostat in it, not the blocked off modern stat fix. Maybe the 232 isn't as prone to running hot like the larger motors...

    I called Dave as well and have a set on the way. Also, for any that want to know NAPA sells the H-11 spark plugs for the Hudson.

    Yep, the dude ended up giving me the Champion H-10. So, being your typical engineer I asked him for the comparison sheets. He gave me the number of a guy back in Ohio and I ended up calling him. The guy in Ohio (probably someone from a homeless shelter) was able to convince me that Champion discontinued the H-11 due to not being able to obtain the metals etc. that they were manufactured from so they upgraded the design and the H-10 are a much better performing plug and are more residtant to things like heat, chemicals and rust. I guess I can live with an H-10. When I got my 36 it had some H-12, H-11 and H10's in it. It seemed to run better then than it does today with the older H-11's. I guess I am a happy camper?

    I recall some conversation on the AACA forum about the metal finish on spark plugs. The newer replacements have a bright finish and the old originals had a black (?) finish. Points are deducted for the wrong finish. The black ones are rare..! who wuda thunk?

    The AACA will deduct for Cadmium plugs in a car before 1956, ie Champions. BUT, any plug brand is fine such as AC or Autolite which are black oxide. I use Original cadmium H-11s. I lightly brush 'em down and , with a small brush, paint on gun blue. This turns the base and threads a black oxide look that will be unaffected by the heat. The reason for H-11 drop, is the plugs were being assembled oversees and the demand was non-existant. The H-10 is still around due to the use in 14mm flat head Fords from 37 to 53 .

    My 36 has H-11's in it and my 54 plugs are going to be H-10's the only difference that I can see is one number "0" rather than a "!." I have long since passed or lost the desire to show a car. I am a happy camper if I can just keep the ones I have running. Of my 4 cars only 2 are running today.
