Hudson Outside Rear View Mirror

We have from time to time had members request information on the actual outside rear view mirror that Hudson marketed thru their dealers. Upon going thru my file of "Service Merchandisers" I found in the November 1950 issue the attached page promoting their new outside rear view mirror. Please not this unit had two ways to adjust the head of the mirror (note the two arrows in the copy) which would allow the mirror to be adjusted correctly for either side of the automobileJerry

Doesn't Paul Shuster sell these?

Paul sells a very, very find reproduction outside mirror, however it does not have the dual adjustment feature needed for a step-down Hudson. I'd surely love to find one of this style just to see what it might cost to have them reproduced in volume.

AT ONE TIME VINTAGE COACH HAD REPRODUCTION MIRRORS ON HAND..MIGHT CHECK THEM OUT AGAIN

Now that ive seen a "Genuine" one ,I can say Ive sold some used ones like that in the past. Had no clue they were not aftermarket,

I dont think so but need to check all the cars now that I know what they are. And yes if I find one on a car in the lot here I would let it go. Most all the cars here right now are parts cars. Ill look tommorow,

I checked my parts room and all the cars on the lot and not a one on the place. Also interesting to note no two alike either ! The mirror bussiness must have been quite competitive,

I've had one of the original mirrors for a long time that is in poor shape. If possible I would like to get it restored some day and put it on my convertible. It has some interesting features. The joint on the neck of the mount that allows the mirror to be turned sideways has a spring loaded detent in it so it sort of ratchets when you turn it to the side. There is a sheet steel mounting bracket that is held to the pot metal base by being peened to 2 pot metal pegs on the bottom of the base. The mounting to the mirror to the car is kind of strange if I have it right: Two sheet metal screws are used to hold it to the door of the car. One of the sheet metals screws is mounted to the car first but not tightened all the way then the head of the partly tightened screw is put through a hole in the sheet steel mounting bracket. Now the whole mirror is slid forward and the partially tightened screw slides along a groove in the bracket and captures one end of the base to the car. The second sheet metal screw is then screwed down through a hole at the rear of the base. There is a little pot metal chromed plug that is inserted into the screw hole after the screw is tightened. I don't know how you would get the plug out if you ever needed to remove it after it is inserted in the hole. Also the front screw was only partially tightened so it would slide in the groove and I don't think there would be any way to tighten it any further so that means its always somewhat loose....kinda strange ...LOL. Thanks for the photos Rob. Wish I had a dollar for every one of these mirrors that I mounted on new cars back in the day. That was one option that my dad insisted be on every car - even if he ended up giving the mirror away in the deal!

i was diggin' thru my stuff yesterday and found one. i had the bracket and gasket in one box and the mirror in another. mine is missing the glass. hey, if this is rare maybe i can put it on ebay like that essex grille shell for $1500. :))

Sit down and take a deep breath - this is gonna hut a bit. I don't think that's a real Hudson mirror like in the prior posting. Look real close and you will see it has a swival head on it as well as a ball and socket. Your's seem's to only have the ball and socket, sorry ,
