Probably the most famous book to come out of the "Beat Generation" was "On the Road" by Jack Kerouac.
According to an article in OCW the movie is being remade (I don't recall seeing the original). In one of the noted sections of the story these guys drive this new Hudson back & forth across the country & the new movie will have them driving a Hudson in it.
The article doesn't say when the movie will be released.

Movie was already shown in Europe, Will be released here in the USA on Dec. 21st this year. The car used in the new film is a tired looking '49 Commodore sedan.

Pete, the movie is finished and is showing in Australia. Its not a remake, the 2012 movie is the first attempt according to Wiki.

I've tried reading the book. I know its a classic and all that but I found it heavy going.

"On The Road" is on my book shelf and I've read it several times. It is a rather interesting commentary on the beat generation of the late 40's, early 50's. It's one of those books I pickup every 3 or 4 years and read over again. Maybe it is more interesting to me because that was the era I grew up in (not as a hippy, mind you). :P Almost forgotten is the Caddy they literally destroyed driving from Denver to Chicago.

Another book that was written back then was"Heat fever or Fever Heat. The first chapter was about this fellow racing a Olds in a 51 or 52 Hornet. They made a movie of it and used Chevys in movie. Cant remember much about it. The movie was disapointing.

Kerouac's book is basically men behaving badly, however upon a re-read which I did a few years ago after Pete (Old Hudsons, above) recommended that I do so, I realized that what is important about the book and why it was such a big deal at the time, is that it is written in jazz! Yes, it has a beat, you can tap your feet as you read it. That is why Kerouac never wanted any of his stuff edited, it screwed up the timing. Dharma Bums, which he wrote on a continuous piece of butcher paper, is almost entirely unreadable, give that a try sometime.

Alex, the "beats" pre-date the hippies by about 10 years. I was a hippie, probably still am!

I was what Time Magazine referred to as a "weekend hippy" as worked during the week & hit the coffee shops etc. in Hollywood on the weekend - loved the music but hated all the cigarette smoke in the low ceilinged coffee houses but it was an "adventure" for a guy from a small town in Indiana!!! LOL

Remember, Hudson stylist Bill Kirby was a "hippy" long
before the term came into vogue. He and Frank Spring may have smoked some strong stuff while conjuring up the 1937 Terraplanes and Hudsons.

i thought i would bring this thread back up since i finally got to see this movie. a small independant theater in town had it yesteray. about 1/2 the movie had great shots of the hudson including neat footage looking out the windshield. all and all i wouldn't recomend it. i enjoyed the music, i can take the drugs & drinking & running around without clothes on screen , but had a too much "man friendship" for me to enjoy!

I cannot believe that none of you have mentioned the movie that Keanu Reeves and I starred in called The Last Time I Committed Suicide http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119502/ It was a low budget flick filmed in Ogden Utah in 97. It was kobbled from the book and followed Jack's trip across America. Some of the shots were actually filmed in the same spots that Jack visited and spent time in, on Ogden's famed 25th street. Grab a copy at one of your movie rental places and get ready for some interesting low budget entertainment. Since the Director, Steven Key, could not find a Hudson for the movie he used a Mercury? I ended up with a number of shots taken with me and my cars, but with only one intersection drive thru making the cut.... Not my best work?
