Interesting Terraplane publicity photo from L.A.

From August of 1932 comes this publicity photo. The caption reads:
"Averaging better than 39 1/2 miles per hour at the top, a new Essex Terraplane conquered the 20.3 per cent grade of Micheltorena hill last week from a "dead" start at the bottom. This shows tracks from Sunset boulevard with winning car in foreground"
This is a view of the Micheltorena Street hill from Sunset Boulevard (which I believe is in Los Angeles), facing north. I spotted it at the University of Southern California's fascinating Digital Library on the Internet. -

Nope. Los Angeles, just southwest of Silver Lake Reservoir.

When the pic is enlarged, there is something sitting at an angle on the side of the cowl of this '32 Terraplane closed car. Anyone have an inkling what it might be? It almost looks like a riveted rectangular badge but the placement is certainly odd and I've not noticed anything like it on other cars. Body company badges are always on the side opposite the driver and at the lowest possible mounting surface. Or could it be a reflection?

O.K then it's in the Silver Lake district just north of downtown.
