1500 mile trip in my 28 Essex Coupe
-
Just home after a 13 day trip in my 28 Essex Coupe. Covered 1520 miles (approx 33% on dirt roads) & got 19.73 mpg.
Said to passenger that we have a new noise- lumpity lumpity as we went up a steep hill, next moment loud bang as rear wheel rim split on both sides & tube blew.. Turned out that I'd accidentally bought a 29 Essex (10 spoke) rim as a spare (didn't fit) but as usual, Geoff Clark came to the rescue & I borrowed his spare to get me going.Friendly fellow HETer helped me to modify rim a day or 2 later as I don't carry a drill press or solid riveting gear in my travelling spares!! Only other (minor) problems were, the drivers door latch spring breaking necessitating the door being tied shut with string & my using passenger door only & my letting the smoke out of the brake light circuit - easy work around resulted in no brake lights & no more problem!!
Cruised around 40 mph & car went well - no water used & only a pint of oil needed
Great trip amongst spectacular country centered around the NZ HET Club AGM (Nationals)Dave Y

Dave, you didn't tell them about the extreme pluviality! If you're stuck in a hole, stop digging.
-
NZ is an indubitably pluvial country.
For those not so verbose---->Pluvial: with an abundance of rainfall
Stick that in your Funk & Wagnalls......
-
David and Geoff just that no8 wire mentality us kiwis we have.
Glad you guys had a great time, wish I could get any where near the 19 mpg
lucky to get 10

Dave.
You dont appear to be using your new name given to you at the AGM and a picture of the presentation watch would be nice.

A picture of My 37 Terraplane coupe a 30 Hudson coupe and a 22 Essex parked at Bruce Bay on the West Coast of the South Island NewZealand on the way home from the AGM. A great trip also did about 1400 miles all up only problem was a blowout that destroyed the side wall of the tyre.

Amazing what you blokes do with your cars. Here in the states we have trouble getting people to get their cars out of their garages, unless it's for a National meet.

The gas milage they get is probably due to the gas , I bet they have real gasoline there. Not this watered down alchol diluted crud we have to use.

Roger, I thought we got everyone elses dregs here!!
Here are a few more photos from the weekend - the top three of the WET rally day, the winners of the rally with their "Piston Cup", and another of some of the cars parked at Shentytown (a museum historic village) where we held the AGM.

Damn - I thought you could go back into your own post to edit spelling mistakes - sorry about the sp error "Shantytown"
Some of you may recognise two of the Piston Cup winners! -
Alex, they restore their cars to enjoy and drive. Just like Margaret and I, a 7,000 mile trip is a short drive in our 53 Hornet Club Coupe. I just wish we had more people driving their Hudson's around, and that would bring in many more Hudson people. Walt.

I'm with you Walt, these cars are for driving. Lauraine and I did 8,000 miles this summer in our '50C6 sedan. We met lots of people who were interested in the car and also some folks who owned Hudsons. Plus it is a great way to see the country. I would love to drive around New Zealand in a Hudson.

Richard E, What's stopping you coming over & driving round NZ ? Either bring your own Hudson or we may be able to find one for you to borrow!!Dave Y

Don't forget that we use the UK gallon, not the smaller US gallon. When I recalculate the gas mileage in US gals I get 16.43 mpg as distinct from 19.73mpg in UK gals!!Dave Y

My '28 Essex coach averaged 20.6 m.p.g. for the trip.If you're stuck in a hole, stop digging.
-
Well that is a little more what might be expected. When I have checked milage my 8 with overdrive got 15-21 mpg depending on the drive. And the little 232 with overdrive would do around 15 mpg most of the time.

Dave, I will get there eventually. However you will have to find me a Hudson, I doubt that I can ship mine there.
-
You all must remember the metering rod for cars overseas are set at 1 or 2 lean, and that is something that must be correct for gas mileage. Walt.
