I was gone all week-end and, when I came back, I wanted to look at the results of the 54 Conv. and the 52 Conv. that were on E-Bay last week. The 54 was a no-sale at $30,100.00 with a buy it now price of $75,900.00 but I forgot to put the 52 add in my favorites to retrieve it. I thought there was no reserve on this one. But this morning, I saw it came back with, this time, a $139,500.00 price tag. With this, I think I'll stop dreaming about a convertible...Michel.

Within Ebay, it is fairly easy to retrieve info on recent auctions (within the last 14 days or so) - just check the 'completed listings' to the left, and it will show you the results of recent auctions.

Never ceases to amaze me- "Well, Bertha, it only bid to 75- but I'm sure one of those guys wanted to pay 65 more than that, and just didn't get a chance to bid."

I'll agree, there is SOME money left on the table when it gets down to the end-of-auction sniping, but not THAT much.

There was an item that I wanted once on Ebay, but am not Ebay savvy, so told my assistant (who is an Ebay jock) to get it for me- go to $75. After it ended, she said "I got sniped out at about 48." Wait a minute- I thought the idea was to just bid 75 if there was still active bidding within the last 5 seconds. "Well (sheepishly) yeah, but I just couldn't do it- if you jump the bid that much, you're overpaying."

But I say, if it gets away for less than you were willing to pay, its "underbidding".

Have always wanted to see Ebay do it differently- Set a time for the auction to end, but extend it at the end as long as there is still active bidding, and don't close it until there hasn't been a bid for a minute. But I guess that wouldn't be as much fun for the buyers, who always want a bargain.

Mike, I Am not that ebay savy myself so what I do is most likely what you had in mind. I will place a bid somewhere along the auction of what I was willing to pay (i.e. your $75 bid). Then, the only way I would loose the item is if someone bid higher than $75. Otherwise you pay one buck above the highest bid. I wanted a set of 39 Hudson lenses really bad and had lost one a week before. I had lost the last set to a $92 bid because I was trying to post a last minute bid. So, I was upset and bit $300 for the new set. I got em for $107. This method has worked for me more than once.

I had a laugh the other night Auction Kings were selling a 37 Terraplane 2 door sedan and the guy selling said it should sell well to someone who wants to buy a brand no one knows about. Rolled on the floor laughing. So 139K for a convertible that is not done to perfection is a total pipe dream. He needs to watch Chasing Classics that guy shows auctions every week and you see Hudsons they had a 50 convertible that was pristine it sold for way less than this guy is asking I think it hit 75K

@MikeWA - What Brownie said... Chances are, if your 'expert' had bid $75, you probably would have gotten your item for under that amount.

And - I don't think the seller with the '52 really wants to sell it. :-?

54SuperWasp-you may not be missing a lot. I've owned 4 Hudson convertibles.
Other than the Wow factor, the 49 Hudson sedan is a much more comfortible and better handling car.A lot quieter.
I did make some money on them , but not like they do today.

Lostmind: The convertible dream is just related to my father who had a 51 H.H.conv when I was nine ( 50 years ago...). I'm more than satisfied with my 54 sedan that is still a project cause it makes me already happy, even if I won't be able to work on it before 6 to 8 months...But I get to take a look at it almost everyday...Thanks to all, Michel.
P.S. Since Super Dave found his, it gives me one more chance to get one...lol

There were two '54 Hudson Hornet convertibles for sale this past weekend at the Chicago-Milwaukee Dixon, IL meet. One for around $50,000.00 and the other $65,000.00. Some tire kicking, but apparently no buyers.

Brownie, I did that overbid thing once - I got a 1929-1939 National Service Manual that way. I'd bid something like $55, somebody raised it to $57. Long story short at the last minute (seconds actually) I dropped $250 on it and got it for $!15. Most I ever paid for anything on ebay, but the material in the book provided a lot of hudsontech bulletins. One of these days I'll sell the thing - but since I've gotten my use out of it I doubt I'll get $115 back, nor do I really care. If I can get $50 or $60 I'll be happy.

Just read in a magazine , I think this months Automoble, that a 1952 Hornet 4 door sedan sold for $179,000 at the Monteerey auction.

That is about 170,000 more than my 50 sold for. What a deal... I think I would go for the Dusenburg sedan that went for 150,000? Be it true--that is just plumb crazy!!!!

For last second eBay bids look at Auctionstealer.com It will bid in the last few seconds.
