HARMON ESTATE
-
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.. Do we have an update on the Jim Harmon Estate.
This is one of those questions that you gotta ask but really fear what the answer will be..
TOM-WA- -
Whatever 's left is being sold as a bundle deal. I may be off , but I believe the asking price is $70,000 or best offer which includes several cars and a huge inventory.Take a Ride in a Hudson Jet!
-
Where do I enter my $1,000.00 bid?
-
you arn't trying to "lowball" 'em like evryone was doing on that ebay manual a week or so back are you? :P
-
AAAAH HHH $1001
-
I would go $1,001.25, however if I bring ANYTHING home that I can't install on my current Hudsons, I'll be in big trouble...
-
JUST AS I THOUGHT......NO SERIOUS BUYERS AND IT'S PROBABLY GONNA END UP AT THE CRUSHERS.....WHAT A SHAME AND A LOSS OF A LIFETIMES WORK AND LOVE.
-
Tom - I counter that the heirs have to be "serious" and realistic about the value of what is there rather than taking the advice of some lawyer & or appraiser!
-
70 K is big bucks if you do not have an inventory of what is there and some expectation that you could use or sell the parts and break even. At this point I would rather go out and buy a high end stepdown convertible and figure I got a better deal. It is that "pig in a poke" thing that my dad often told me about.Brownie
-
<<<<agrees with Brownie - it says "several cars"; OK, what years, models, condition thereof???<br />& at least some type of an inventory, GEEZ, as Brownie says who'd be stupid enough to buy a "pig in a poke" for 70-75 "big ones"????
-
Yup - both Brownie and Pete are right...
AND, to top that off - Most likely it has already been 'picked thru', and what they could sell easily - is already gone... Whoever buys it gets the 'leftovers', 'scrap' that wasn't wanted, or not easily sold, etc.. -
46 - not sure about that; was invited, along with others, by him to stop at his place on way home from National that was held in Tacoma. I inquired about an 8 engine & others tried to buy stuff from him - end result, no one bought ANYTHING as he'd find some excuse why he had to keep it! Altho he was very nice about it we all left feeling frustrated & kinda POed as we'd gone some distance out of our way + burned off hours just to get over to his place then driven around the country side to barns he rented he had cars in, but all por nada!
-
IF RHETORIC, EXCUSES AND PROCRASTINATION WERE WORTH ANY $ THE HET WOULD BE WORTH MILLIONS
-
Tom - You're there, have at it...
And Pete - So nobody has 'acquired' anything from the estate, since his death? Highly doubtful... I'd be willing to bet it has been picked-over pretty well. -
I'd like to hear if any HETers actually put in an offer. If I had it to spare I'd put in one pending more information on what exactly it all is. But as I said in a previous thread on the subject if the organization is really interested in preservation and continuing to drive the cars it needs to evolve an mechanism to deal with such estate situations.
-
if the organization is really interested in preservation and continuing to drive the cars it needs to evolve an mechanism to deal with such estate situations.
The organization needs to evolve a mechanism before it becomes an estate!!!!!!
Proactive not reactive!
Kevin C. -
I would think the only guy, at least that I know of, who would know what is there & it's condition, would be Dick Riggs of Portland, a long time HETer & a former member of the Bd. of Directors. I don't have his e-mail address, assuming he has one, but if interested would sure contact him.
It would certainly be a shame to see tons of Hudson parts, engines, maybe complete cars get junked. -
As far as I know Riggs has been involved
-
Jim should of left the hudson stuff to the HETHS and the could have auctioned it off at a national in San mateo next year. With his health failing you would of thought he would of made some plans on moving his inventory.
-
WITH NO ONE STEPPING UP TO THROW BIG $ AT THIS I SEE A AUCTION BEING HELD OUT THERE WITH A LOT OF HUDSON GUYS BIDDING ON STUFF IT'S THE ONLY WAY THERE GOING TO SELL IT I DON'T SEE IT GOING TO THE JUNK YARD JUST YET THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT FOOLS AND THERE LOOKING FOR AS MUCH AS THEY CAN GET
-
Paul - it might be left up to the new owners of the property & they may well just have it removed, ergo, junked!
-
I WASN'T THINKING THAT IT HAD BEEN SOLD??
-
Paul - I understand the real estate has been sold ergo in escrow, assuming Ore. has escrow.
I'm sure Jim's widow can hardly wait to "take the money & run" as she very much disliked the whole Hudson "thing" Jim enjoyed so much. The 1st time I visited him with several other guys she immediately left the house & walked off, she didn't even want to be introduced to us - I could tell Jim was embarrassed. -
If you want to get ahold of Jeff Riggs, here's his website that includes his email address. He probably would be one of the best contacts for what the current inventory is:

I wish is wasn't all happening like this....sad to see this stuff end up as re-bar in a bridge somewhere!!
LeeThis Hudson project is starting to scare the crud out of me!!! -
Pushing along into my mid-70's I've already started passing along my Hudson liteature, files, research material, etc to someone else. My room-mate knows that my books will go to the library book store and I'm going to pass along my CD collection to Tunes 4 the Troops or some organization like that. Otherwise I know where it will all end up.

Like Alex I'm now in my mid-70s. Turned almost all of my parts over to Al Saffrahn to sell for me, which he has largely done, gave away some special tools & literature and will bring rest of my literature collection, my dealership clock, factory plastic model, Chapin book + a few other incidentals to San Mateo.
Have always enjoyed so many of the personal relationships I've built up over the last 50 years within the Club membership so still really enjoy going to meets, seeing old friends & renewing acquaintances. Went to Gettysburg, going to Laughlin next month, then to San Mateo next year.
"Time & tide wait for no man" and altho I'm in good health, that tide is in the offing ~ -
I HEAR YOU PETE MY SON SAID TO ME A FEW YEARS AGO ''DAD WHY ARE WE KEEPING ALL THIS STUFF THAT DOES NOT FIT OUR CARS '' I SAID'' YOUR RIGHT'' SO I'VE BEEN SELLING OFF ALL THE STUFF I CARTED HOME OVER THE LAST 45 YEARS I FIND STUFF I DO NOT KNOW HOW LONG AGO I GOT IT OR WHAT I PAID BUT I'M HAVING A BLAST SELLING IT OFF AND MY GRANDSONS JUST LOVE FLEA MARKETING WITH ME ALL 3 OF THEM OF COURSE THEY GET A NICE PAY WHEN WE HAVE A GOOD DAY BUT THEY DO HELP OUT AND I'M HAVING FUN WITH THEM :)
-
I started selling off stuff last summer (I am nearing 70). The good stuff went fast and at a good price. Most of what I have left will go in the trash... Kinda sad but then it all started out as wall-art so good or bad it is still that. I would however; like to sell off my Kodak "Brownie" camera collection. If not I have no idea what to do with it?Brownie
-
Brownie-
Some museums now have camera displays. It's kinda weird seeing the old row of flashcubes sitting behind glass like it's some obsolete technology from the past . . . oh, wait . . . that's what it is (like the typewriters). But, perhaps a museum would be interested in your collection. I know the Cowboy Museum in OKC has a nice camera "room" where they display everything from the earliest glass plate monsters to 35mm's that still took film. In other words, anything that is pre-digital. -
Brownie, google "camera museum" and you'll find them all over the place. Perhaps there is one near you so you could visit your "babies"!!!!!!!

Living in Australia it is harder to sell Hudson parts to down size the spare parts collection. Harder because there is not as many cars and air freight is expensive. I have been lucky lately selling parts to people whose father or sons name was Hudson. Another had a friend who owned a Hudson and so wanted my mascot. Saving parts is a concern. Barry
-
Hoarding is a sickness - whether its zippo lighters, pez dispensers or Hudson cars/parts!
Maybe it's time to create a Hudson Intervention Group (HIG) to descend upon and liberate Hudson collections across the USA :-))
That reminds me - I have a bunch of parts I'm not ever going to use - better put my money where my mouth is :D -
Rambo - An old car guy once told me this car thing is a disease and the worst thing that can happen to a car collector is to have enough money and space to keep all that he wants. Then nothing will stop the disease from spreading. LOL
-
AMAZING....I TRY TO GET AN ANSWER ABOUT THE HARMON ESTATE AND IT RAPIDLY SHOOTS OFF TO A DISCUSSION OF CAMERAS AND PEZ DISPENSERS....
ONCE AGAIN...DOES ANYONE HAVE AN UPDATE REGARDING THE EXACT STATUS OF THE
HARMON COLLECTION? (LET'S SEE WHERE THIS TAKES US) -
Rambo, Was there any doubt that we were all sick? Now, where can I buy a few PEZ dispensers?Brownie
-
Tom-
Obviously nothing yet has happened. But I'm reasonably sure that solutions will present themselves one way or the other in short order. -
I believe Mr Richard Riggs was the person closest to him and his place. He may chime in with some update info. I know he is a HET member so dont want to post his email so he doesnt get bombed with emails.
Jeff -
I might be in trouble. I have a Hudson PEZ dispenser. I think my sickness has spread.
-
I HAVE I ALSOHUDSON PEZ AND I HAVE 2 HUDSON LIGHTERS :)
-
Well ya see TOM,
children and us ol farts do have a short attention span........
just where can I get a Hudson PEZ dispenser????? :)) -
(Well, I don't think there are enough rebuild candidate cars that still cast a good shadow for all the parts that are out there. Also not enough guys young enough to invest 2-3 years to rebuild them. I too am over the 3/4 century mark and still have 2 on the burner (40 coupe & 46 PU) and 4 on the road to take care of. (36T, 47PU, 29 C and 52 HH) 2 for sale that I'm never gonna get to and 2 to scrap. And 2 Jeep trucks besides.
I went to the Smith auction this spring and several 308s were going to the scrapper for $40 each. I got the gasket board including 15 NOS head gaskets for 212, 254 and big 6 and 3 NOS timeing gears for $3. Had to pay Frank for a couple of upper grill bars I was sleepin on tho.
49SS for sale $500 all there and runs. 51 Hollywood automatic with smashed roof. Motor turns $900. Good running 52 Black/Boston Creme Twin H Hornet sedan $12,500 -
This was posted online about 7/28 (googled Jim Harmon Oregon)

I knew Jim all my life. My father did business with him in the 1960's and 70's. I visited his property several times and was amazed at the mass of cars and parts he had accumulated. Buildings full of NOS parts, stacks of differentials, Hudson memorabilia, etc., and a lot of complete cars in rows around the property. He would come and visit and take me for rides in his cars. He did this because he knew of my love for cars. I saw him two weeks before he passed away.
To the right person (web seller) that knows Hudson's it could be a gold mine. Whoever says its worth 1K is disrespecting him and his family. Someone smart will buy all that inventory knowing its one heck of a deal. If these where say "Chevelle" cars and parts, it would be valued at 7 figures.
Jim was a fireman and a hero. I remember going to the hospital when I was little with my parents when he was badly burned in a fire. He must have been fighting for his life.
I also remember his wife as being a very nice lady. She kept a very clean home. I imagine she didn't like Jim's hobby but put up with it because she loved him.

snydertoolaolcom THE TROUBLE IS MOVING EVERY THING IF SOME ONE WOULD BUY IT ALL MOVING IT WOULD COST THOUSANDS OF $ I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE IT ALL BUT I LIVE IN THE EAST FOR ME IT WOULD TAKE A MONTH OUT WEST TO GET IT ALL READY TO SHIP AND THE THEN THE TRUCKING COSTS AND A PLACE TO PUT IT WHEN I GOT IT ALL HOME THEN PUTTING IT ALL AWAY WOULD TAKE MONTHS THEN TO SELL IT CARTING IT AROUND THE COUNTRY TO MEETS WOULD TAKE YEARS TO SELL IT ALL I JUST DON'T SEE IT BEING A MONEY MAKER
-
It needs to go to someone with internet skills, a place to keep it, and probably semi retired. I lack the money to buy it, and the space to store it, but have the internet skills and the time.....pfft.
-
HERE WE GO AGAIN WITH ANOTHER ROUND OF WHAT IF'S AND COULDA SHOULAS'
By now I would assume that the estate has been settled and some sort of disposition of the
Hudson inventory accomplished.
WOULD SURE BE NICE TO GET AN INFORMED ANSWER AS TO WHAT FINALLY TRANSPIRED -
Tom, back up a few posts and there is a phone #, Fax # and address to contact. Let us know what you find out. I hope you find the answers to your questions will be good news.
Lee O'Dell -
The buyer will need to get so shipping containers or trailers dropped off at Jim's place and then assemble a team of people to inventory and load it. Then the transport company will come out with tractor trailers to transport them to the buyer's location, The the team will unload and store it in the new location.
I did this with a group of Flxible bus enthusiasts back in 2006. I flew up to Cleveland , OH on SW Airlines, Butch Lutz and Larry Owens swung by in Butch's 1955 Flxible VL-100 and picked me up (I don't think the bus actually came to a complete stop as I stepped in and Larry pulled me in). We drove through the cold night to Lansing, MI to where the Flx parts were. This was in February. Yes, MI in February. It was freezing. Over the next two days we inventoried and loaded the parts into trailers, using a forklift and pallets. The building had heaters, but the seller of the parts was a cheap @$$ and refused to turn the heat on. We worked as hard and faast as we could, just to keep from freezing our keisters off. It snowed. I had to make wooden clamps to secure the huge heavy Torsilastic front suspension arms to the pallets. Larry was running around like a madman, barking orders at us sub-ordinates like a drill sergeant. I can remember feeling to relieved when all the parts were closed up in the trailers and I was headed back to the airport for my SW flight back to warmer TX. In all it's an adventure to go collect a big parts stash, but you better be up to it! Kenneth -
Tom,
Since you are a member of the of the Northewst Chapter of the Hudson Essex Terraplane Club, and know most of the members of the Northwest Chapter, I would think that you would have information to share with us regarding the Harmon Estate.
John Forkner -

-
I'm a NW HET member/newsletter editor and I did speak with Dick Riggs last week about this. The Harmon family is hoping to find a buyer and there were a couple of prospects. Whether or not an agreement and physical removal of the inventory before the Jan 1 date can possibly happen is not clear; obviously the window is rapidly closing. There are some contingency plans being formed in case the sale doesn't occur before that date (or at all), and I think Dick Riggs and Doug Bomarito are leading that effort on behalf of Christine Harmon. As Paul states above, there is a storage area fairly close by (3-4 miles?), and they will need help moving everything if it comes to that. Hope NW HET can find some folks in the area (or outside the area!) to help inventory and move this collection if it comes to that. I think most members who knew Jim wants to help keep his labor of love from simply going to the scrap heap. I was there and saw a sampling of the inventory just the day before Jim passed away. I don't know what is left there, as most of the cars and some parts were sold prior to this current sale. I will try to keep on top of this and keep folks posted.
