Opened a can 'o worms... Cracking around valve seats.

So I popped the head off to see what I need to do to get my compression back and stop the smoke blowing through the crankcase. Badly burned valves are there, bores 'look' good (not trashed, no scoring) but I haven't measured them yet, but what bums me out is several valve seats are cracked. Exhaust valves #2,3,4 and intake #1. Anything I can do with the engine in the car? I was hoping to get by with new valves and a ring job. Is the block toast at this point?

I had two valve seats replaced in my Jet some years ago. They did it in place, so it can be done. You will have to find the right engine rebuilders with the gear.

No the block is not toast. You may have to pull the block for the machine shop. Many do not have the old time tools to replace with a new seat. Many times I have made a 7X block with thes. By the time you machine the relief and open the pockets for 7X valves, the crack is gone.

I read an article once about repairing damaged blocks. Cracks, and such are not hopeless there are ways to fix things. The man who they were interviewing said he never threw away a block or head because it "Could Not Be Fixed"

IT'S BETTER YOU OPENED UP YOUR CAN OF WORMS AT HOME WHERE YOU CAN FIX THE TROUBLE BETTER THAN ON THE ROAD TO A HUDSON MEET OR OTHER SHOW IN THE HEAT ON A NICE DAY

You should see the valves... I never personally overheated it, and it ran strong through the summer.

I knew it would have to be gone through eventually. But I figured if it ran well enough I would get some fun from it while I could instead of tearing it apart, running out of time/money, and then just looking at it in the driveway. I'm at a better financial point now too, so it's not as depressing.
