main bearings 0n 308
-
After re-reading the instructions!!!!!!!perhaps the main bearing that has the saddle design does not go on #1 saddle ,but goes on the # 3 saddle? This might account for the excessive end play that I see even though I have not measured it yet?? And this might be why the fit was too tight getting the bearing shell onto the #1 saddle?
-
Yes, you are correct. The thrust bearing goes on the #3 main. I ruined a thrust bearing the same way when I rebuilt a 308 that I got in pieces. I chaulked it up to a lesson learned. It took me a while before I was able to locate a single bearing shell in the correct size.
Good luck,

Tryed researching this issue to no avail......Thank you Rich for this imformation you and I have learned the hard way!!!! I got the saddled bearing on the #1 journal and other than perhaps bending it more than it should have been did not distroy it . I wonder if I should try to use it or get this saddle bearing replaced.
-
If any one out there has a .010 over saddle bearing I am all ears to purchasing it?
-
Check with bill and Charlie's on eBay. That's where I found mine.

fyi
I recommend obtaining another Thrust bearing then start over. Be sure the Brg Insert oil holes line up in block, use 40 or 50wt oil on the inserts, keep 'Brg Tangs' toward each other, tighten Caps down alternately left & right, torque a couple times then 'Pack' the caps...(Be certain when inserting Connecting Rods the Oil Holes point toward Camshaft),,,,Good Luck -
Thanks every one for the good imformation to comfirm my mistake..........I have a line on a replacment # 3 thrust bearing
.Just for the amusment of all that are wondering what I fellow looks like that does such a thing...Even my dog is looking at me wondering what is wrong and my wife who took the photo asked me if we are having fun?..Ha
