Existing accessory voltage reducer?

As some of you may know, I'm converting to 12 volts (sorry for so many questions and posts) and I am trying to find voltage reducers for the accessories and I was told this about my '52, "Your Hudson should have a instrument voltage regulator already. You might be able to use the regulator you have with 12 Volts, as all it is is a bimetal strip type voltage regulator that goes on and off and keeps the voltage somewhere around middle of battery voltage. If it does not work, then get the IVR from 56 and up Fords. That should work..It is a little metal box, about 1 1/2 x 3/4 inches. Has two wires."
... Can anyone confirm this, and under my dash looks like spaghetti, so any unnecessary rewiring would be great. Thanks

Yes, foundkat, this info is correct. You can use the original regulator, but the gauges may read about 1/4 scale too high, as the regulator can't quite compensate for the doubled input voltage. And it has to do a lot more making and breaking, handling twice the voltage it was designed for, so the life of the original regulator may be shortened. The Ford regulator works fine. Availoable from Dennis Carpenter Ford parts or other sources.

Wow! great information... What is the Ford regulator actually called? I've been to about six auto parts stores and a radio shack trying to round up an individual voltage reducer, regulator, drop... every name I can think of and I'm trying to explain what these parts do and I'm getting no where. Thanks.
