50 Commodore progress

Want to share my progress on my 50 HC 8. My intent is to take all suspension parts, gravel shields,grill surround pieces apart paint. I'll replace any worn components. Gonna paint firewall, fender edges,and top of cowl. Maybe next winter I'll be able to do the same to the body.
Any and all comments, instruction and encouragement will be appreciated.

Looks good, Kim. Sent you a PM. My plan is to go with Ceramic paint on the front end frame and suspension components. Not completely necessary, but it is much more durable. Paint for the firewall, should be same color as the body.
As far as the inner fender panels go, if originality is your plan, glossy black was the way they came from the factory. Again, my plan is to have all of these powder-coated, but paint works, just not as durable.

This is where I am at this point. Gonna take crossember, upper, lower control arms along with inner fender panels and splash gauards. My block is supposed to be ready this week.

Seems I'm not proficient at posting pics yet. I think it has to do with patience. My 15 year old daughter has to help me cause I usually manage to mess it up by not waiting long enough.
Something I learned the hard way is to not stand the column upside down as there's no seal at the top of the gear box. I'm sure most everybody else would have known this, but it never entered my mind. I thought it would give me good access to gear box to clean and paint. Oh well, it dripped oil for several days as it hung from wires from the ceiling. I figured everyone would get giggle out of that or a, boy is he dumb. I'm really enjoying putting this car back to gether. The hard part is trying to remember how some of components go back. It's been 5 years since I took it all apart. I cleaned, bagged and tagged each section back then so that makes it easier to put together.
I plan to mix a bit of paint and shoot the toe board area as that's the way it looked when I took it apart. I'm not trying to factory correct but trying to a good amatuer job.

Kim nice job, Iam way behind you in starting my 52 hornet. Is that a hose that comes out of the center under the vent? or a heater hose . The little critters got to mine before I could save it, So Iam a little lost as to what goes where. Thanks John

That hose is the water drain for the vent. If it's not there, the rain water will drain right out onto the back of the block.1953 Hornet sedan Twin-H

Caved in quarter and fender. Bad paint. Non-True-Trac heap. But it's paid for. -
Just a bit more progress. Decided to use a satin chassis paint, takes quite awhile to dry. As you may have noticed, I don't have a high end shop. Just a humble 2 car garage. I'm real tight for space as I have a bass boat in there that owner hasn't come to get. I was hired to wet sand and buff the clear. I was a mess. Drips, runs, sags and orange peel on steroids. So it has me cramped. Strorage gonna eat it up if It doesn't leave here soon.

Looking good! I remember when I started it was in a barn behind dad's house. When I rented my first home it was a carport. When I bought my first house I passed up some nice places to be sure that I got a two car garage. Wow! That was a long time and a few cars back. Thanks for the memories....Brownie

I've been working on the engine off and on engine and some other details since last update. I taken quite a few parts to a stripper and gotten them back and now have somew pieces at a powder coater. Some of the bolts I used stainless steel, smoothed the tops, then buffed em. I want to point out, I wouldn't be where I am with this engine project if it hadn't been for Dr. Doug.

Kim, nice looking engine block, what did you paint it with?

I used a metal etch primer then Duplicolor #1615 aluminum. That is after hours of scrubbing with brake clean and laquer thinner.

The 254 and frame/body are reunited after nearly 6 years. Gettin closer to first startup. I'm also trying a different throttle setup eliminating the somewhat complicated original setup. Tried to take pix of it. I used a Lokar universal throttle cable and a Lokar cable bracket that normally holds the throttle and kickdown cable off late model 8. It helps to ahve a Hot Rod/Street Rod and Steering column builder 3 miles from my home. Ididit Hot Rod Stuff and also my part time job.
