Locations of Serial Numbers on 1946-1947 Hudson Frame/Suspension?
-
I have a 1947 Hudson pickup truck frame, rescued from a scrapper. I got it from someone in the local area by chance, when they found my website, and called - looking for more information on the truck. I saw the truck when it was 'whole' - body was very, very rough - although the frame didn't look bad. The owner had made a deal, and sold the body of the truck to a 'rodder', who did not want the frame/suspension or drivetrain. I bought the frame, an 'impulse purchase', to save it from being scrapped.
The engine is long gone, however the frame and suspension is intact. I am trying to find the serial number, as a reference for the club registry/database and if at some point it is used as part of a build...
Where would serial numbers be put, on the frame or suspension? (pictures would of the location(s) would be GREAT!).
Have been going thru Alex's online owners manuals, tech manuals, etc.. They provide quite a bit of data on the plate locations, how to decipher serial numbers, etc., but there is no mention anything about the location of serial numbers on the frame or suspension components... -
Those "confidential number" or "secret number" or "hidden number" locations are used by law enforcement to identify altered or stolen vehicles where VIN or serial number tags have been removed or changed. Law enforcement agencies have books covering this subject but have forever been unwilling to share this with the public or hobby for obvious reasons from their perspective.
On the other side of this coin is the hobbyist who is seeking to verify or maintain the "numbers" authenticity of a vehicle to keep it legal, get it legal, or when the frame has been rusted or damaged beyond repair and must be replaced. It is my contention that these number locations must be documented for the hobby to keep us from making inadvertent, innocent legal errors. We require the knowledge of locations in order to properly restore legal cars.
That doesn't help you with the pickup frame but it may prompt someone to do a research project for HET cars. -
Internet search found a classiccar.com discssion, where Kevin C. posted some photos of locations he found serial numbers on his '39 112 coupe -
Look for Kevin's post about 1/2 way down the page - Thanks Kevin! Don't know if it will apply to the 1947, but am going to check...

The serial number on the frame is located on the right side of the fame just below the carb, on the rear axel and the top of the frame where the frame curves over the axel. The last location cannot be seen with the pickup bed on the truck.

@glens46golden - Based on Kevin's photos, I went out and looked on my tan '46 (bed is off), found the serial number, far back on the right-side of the frame (on the top) just in front of where the rear brace is welded/riveted to the frame. The serial number was in the same location on the '47 too.
I'll need to go back out and look on the inside of the frame at the front - no engine/trans, etc., to gauge from, but the description gets me 'close'.
If you could be a bit more specific as to where on the rear axle the serial number is, it would be helpful. -
On the 1941 trucks, the number is located as Glen has said. Mine is apart and easy to see with the frame cleaned and repainted. A little rust and grease will easily hide these number which are otherwise easy to see.

On the rear housing, it is on the top side near the right u bolts for the spring.

Pictures of the rear serial number location on my '47 Hudson pickup frame:

You can actually read the serial number in the photo, if you look hard enough. Hint: The number starts with "178..." -

Just found the serial number on the differential housing on my '46 while cleaning it up this weekend. Also had a truck of unknown origin and after finding the one on the '46 checked the same place and found it there as well. Both were on the top right side of the axle tube inside of the springs but within 3-4 inches of the spring. They were both very close to where the tapped hole for the brake line clip was. The number was not right on top, they were both 5-10 degrees toward the rear of the housing. Was glad to find them...helped me identify my other truck.

I do not see the number on the frame in front of the cab on my 47 PU.
Lee O'Dell -
I think it's under the passenger door, Lee. In that area.

Same location on the 1940 pick top of frame
