clutch fluid leak
-
i have a puddle of clutch fluid under my 53 after it sets for a bit. any ideas as to what might be wrong would be appreciated before i put it on stands and crawl under?
thanks steve -
First, are you sure it's clutch fluid and not transmission oil?
Second, if clutch fluid, remove the flywheel cover (2 small bolts, at least in my '37) and get in there with a flashlight to find the source of the leak. Might be gasket. Might be you didn't tighten the bolt last time you installed the fluid. Might be something else. -
thanks Jon for comments. almost positive its clutch fluid. it does not have smell of gear lube in transmission. will get under her in the coming week. carpet was installed today and rest is almost completed. need to install hood also.

Make sure that you get the proper copper "crush" washer under each of the two plugs where you drain and add the "hudsonite!" I had the incorrect washers under mine and I lost all of my clutch fluid driving cross country and had to add new. By the way, copper crush washers are not easy to find. I ended up finding some correct diameter spark plugs and grinding the threads off to get the crush washer off of each of two spark plugs. Great fix, I haven't lost anymore clutch fluid and I have driven 5,000 miles since fix!

ALSO YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHECK THE TIGHTNESS OF CLUTCH COVER TOTHE FLY WHEEL BOLTS MAKE SURE THERE TIGHT AND AS JOHN SAID MAKE SURE THE PLUGS ARE TIGHT
