1965 Mustang

I'm looking for a good source for sheet metal parts for a 1965 Mustang. I'd rather pay a little more for something that fits well, rather than less money for something that fits poorly. If anyone has experience with this, your advise would be greatly appreciated.:)

    Thanks

    Have you tried

    NPD

    Year One

    Mustangs Unlimited

    CJ Pony Parts

    KAR Mustang

I haven't tried anyone yet. I'm aware of some of those companies you listed there. But I thought someone might say for example, "Year One is the best but over priced and NPD is just as good for half the money." JUST AS AN EXAMPLE. I have no experience with any of them. Thought some of the guys might be able to push me in the right direction.

The guys on a Mustang board that I check on for input seem to like the quality and price of CJ Pony Parts.

Personally I have never heard of them so I can not vouch for them.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of Mustang people on this board.

WOW, some heavy duty cutting there.

Do you plan to get a donor car for the rear section?

Looks like it will be tedius to get everything lined back up.

Best of luck and keep the progress photos coming.

Well I didn't fab up all of the parts on this one. I thought I would sorta' take a break from fab work and just install pre-fabbed pieces. It's been an interesting project. I've never worked with re-popped parts.

Everything is going to be remanufactured pieces, no donor car.

What do you want to see pictures of?:)

I'm willing to look at anything you care to share. I worked with my father-in-law back in the late 60's on into the 70s' in his body and learned a lot. Back then we repaired vehicles not replaced parts. So, I understand the work process you are going through and give you a lot of credit for tackling it.

This was the first Mustang I've ever worked on. Also the first one I've ever seen with the interior out of it. I thought it would be less work than it was. No piece came out of the box and went on the car. Every one had to have something done to it. But, that said, it's still better than making everything from scratch. The owner wanted it to be a nice car that wasn't obviously repaired. But he didn't want me to get too detailed on things that would be covered up. Under carpet, under side of car, etc. So that's what I did.

The entire floor needs to be replaced. From the toe board to the tail panel. Also the wheel wells on the driver's side, both quarters, the frame rail under the truck on one side. Both doors, the top of the cowl/vent area, then various small patches and repairs all over.

hmmm, if a rusty fender falls off of a Mustang on the Ford forum here, and nobody is there to hear it. Does it still make a sound?

    Apparently not likely.

I have been away for a while because I am moving. I really thought there would be more posts but I guess not much action.

Now if the fender falls off all by itself, then something is realy wrong , don't cha think?

So tell me, how goes the project? Anything new happening?

    Haha!

Last I heard the owner is shopping around for paint. This car will get done, and the owner is a really nice guy. So I think I will get updates, eventually.

Thanks for your interest. I think this is a really neat project.

Hi Paul! That's great! Good for you, and the grand boys too.
Hopefully you won't have to do as much metal work on yours as I had to do on this one. But after doing one of these cars myself, if you need any suggestions on the body panel replacement just ask me. I'll help if I can. ...From doing that job, I have heard that there are common problems with the aftermarket panels. Fitment issues that I had to deal with, that I have seen on other projects too. Not just the car I was working on.

How about some pictures? I'd like to see what the boys are doing. :D

Aside from our Hudsons, we have also owned a '66 Mustang since 1979. Paul Schuster and Dave Sollon know it well...

Really, when it comes to Mustang parts, quality should not be an issue as Ford still makes most all of the panels and floor pieces. Replacement parts independently produced are also available and many of the Mustang places handle both.

Mustangs Unlimited and Mustangs of Oklahoma we have had good success with.

    Good luck with the project.!

Ford still makes the panels?!? Did not know that. Do you have a link to that site?

I went into this project thinking that the same thing had been done by others, a million times. Looked like a two week project to me. It took six weeks. I got the body panels from the most highly recommended aftermarket supplier I could find. Suggested by several pro's, that had done this kind of job. Along with a warning, "these parts will need some adjustment to fit". Looking back now, I imagine everyone who gave me that warning had a grin on there face when they wrote that. ;)
