Timeframe for National Meets -

This thread sort-of goes along with the cost of hotels and accomodations for the National Meets, however will most likely bring along it's own comments, recommendations, etc., so it may be best to begin a different thread on it.

    - Why is the National held during the summer months (July, August), what is normally the HOTTEST time of the year? Why can't it be held earlier, in Apr, May, or early/mid June, mid-late September? ** I know that there has been some recent activity to change the club's by-laws to expand the months in which the National is held...

    - Why a five day meet (usually Tues-Sat)? Why not three days (Fri-Sun, or Thurs-Sat, etc.)?

Forgive me if I am 'treading on sacred ground' here, however -
From what I've seen, there are a lot of tours and bus trips, etc., scheduled in conjunction with the National Meets. What is the general impression of these type of scheduled events? Do they add-to or detract-from the overall (intended) purpose of the National Meet?
Would it be better if the total number of National Meet days were reduced to 3-days, and schedule these type of activities organized and conducted as a 'pre' or 'post' meet type of scheduling, so as not to detract from or act as a distraction to the overall meet itself?

I doubt there would be much support for shortening the event. Often it is combined with a regional meet so isnot technicly 5 days anyway. There may be support for moving to cooler times of the year .The events added like tours are in my opinion needed to keep the family members occupied .Giving the guys more fredom to kick tires etc.
And moving into the weekend would not be a issue as far a I can see. Some folks do work during the week and cant get away easily,
    Just my opinion,

A few years back we had a committee put together to advise about moving the National out of the summer months. Supposedly the issue had surfaced at other times before that. Then the issue of moving the national resurfaces every year we have a particularly hot month during the National. Nashville comes to mind when the heat index hit 120 degrees. What was basically said last time was that it needs to stay in the summer months by virtue of the fact that it is when families, and kids have off to attend. Now one might argue that the reality is there's not that many families or kids in the club and it's mostly older guys but giving younger families the chance to attend does increase our odds of getting new younger members.
Some Nationals have taken some pains to get the meet under at least some shade in some way such as a parking garage... Thing of it is that some months you end up competing with some other well-known national events or festivals. So there the issue sits. It's a gray area but basically the host chapter can have it currently half way through June to half way through August.
Also it's not really a week. Most all Nationals combine that region's Regional Meet of 1-2 days with the National Meet to make it a week long. I'm not against other times of the year personally but you basically have to black out winter and holidays unless you have a very very far south meet. Then there's the issue of when most people who do work can get off work. The there's car season...when people actually do any work on their cars or buy any parts and you're back to warm weather months.

Roger - I agree, there would be little support for shortening the National Meet, and most likely only 'minor support' to moving it to a bit later in the year - children being in school and all.
However, school years usually end right around Memorial Day, so early, mid or even late June should not present an issue...

Also - Why not schedule the 'basics' or 'bones' of the National Meet on one or two days, when there are no other events, tours, or other distractions that detract from them?
Or, the reverse - schedule events, tours, etc., on specific days (pre/post meet), so as to allow for minimal disruptions for those that can only come 1, 2 or three days?

During many meetings at this last National I saw many internal meetings disrupted, abandoned (call it what you will), well-into the meetings, or not attended at all - when people needed leave to 'catch the bus' to a tour or other event that was scheduled to depart. What that amounts to is an abundance of activities (a good thing, in a way), however unless well planned and correctly timed, they WILL disrupt and detract from the primary activities and purpose of the meet itself.

Why could'nt the meetings be held in the evenings after dinner ? Leaving the daytime for the tours and such . Seems like after 5-6 pm there is generaly nothing to do but mingle around,

This is not related directly to the topic under dicussion, but I want to extend an invitation to anyone who wants to join us in October in a Back-country safari and attend our Annual get-together here in N.Z. How do I open up a new category in this forum?

There's an Events category, Geoff. You could simply start a new Discussion, and pick that as the category.

Actually, the average temperature for Gettysburg is 74 degrees... It might have gotten that low overnight, but didn't stay there long! LOL!

Average for French Lick, IN is supposed to be 75 degrees...

Looked up Oklahoma City - average there is 84 degrees!
