1978 Olds Delta 88: Problem with engine knock + fuel coming out top of carb when turned off

    Hey everybody, 1st post!

Anyways, I am having a problem with engine knock when I turn off the car. It's like it tries to keep running and fuel comes out the top of the carb. Not sure what the problem is. I don't think this is related but I flushed the radiator last week and this problem came about afterward. The timing is factory spec, I checked all the vacuum lines and one was disconnected by the distributor cap. Replaced it and it ran better for a while, but didn't fix the problem. Then I adjusted the fuel/air mixture and it didn't help. I replaced the timing gear and chain a few months ago. I'm stumped. Part of why I'm so confused is it doesn't do it all the time? And something really weird happened today, I cut the engine off and it made the sound a diesel engine does when it starts up. Thanks in advance for your 2 cents!

Sounds like you Olds is running-on or dieseling. Do you have an electric fan getting power straight from the ignition switch? The spinning fan acts like a generator while it's spinning down giving enough juice to run the engine for a bit. If not that - you're probably running really hot, and there's enough heat, likely in the sparkplugs, to ignite the fuel mixture without a spark.
Six in a row makes it GO!
  • Thanks for the speedy response. I cleaned the carburetor and treated the gas with the 'anti-carbon' solution. I also filled up with ethanol free 93 just to see if that would help.. I put 87 in it for a week or two and this problem arose. It hasn't dieseled since, but I haven't ran it in the heat of the day in a while.. I replaced the thermostat and did a radiator flush. Tomorrow I am going to check the spark plugs (I did a tune up within the last 3000 miles) but it couldn't hurt. I'll keep ya posted. Anywho here's some pictures of the beast.

(ps the fourth pic is a joke pic)
