The local NAPA, Advance Auto and NTB no longer carry 6V batteries that have the proper size or post location for
    my Pacemaker.

Any recommendations? Optima is out due to the $200+ cost.

Here in GA. we have O'Reilly auto parts, I bought three batteries from them in the last two years. All were 6 volt and the posts were located correctly. The last one was bought about two months ago, I think it was about $79.00 Richie. (all different cars)

You might try Interstate batteries -
    interstatebatteries.com/

You may well end up having to special-order the battery for your car, however there are locations/distributors all over the place...

Find a place that carries Interstate Batteries, we have them at the service station I hang out at. Just delivered one for a 39 Hudson 8. Walt.

Carquest can get them or go to a farmstore. All old tractors still use 6 volt. I cant get the group 2L but just buy the group 2. Its alittle smaller but works. Dont know where you live. We have a Blaines farm store and they have them on the shelf for 59.95 exchange.

I bought mine from Interstate of Las Vegas. It was in stock and fit my Hornet perfectly and has plenty of cranking power. Three other parts stores I tried in Vegas did not have the right size 6 V battery. The engine starts immediately. $110

If you go the 6 volt Optima battery route as I've done, you may want to consider a disguise battery case from Quail Services. They sell a battery case that'll contain your optimal battery and look pretty much like a vintage 6 volt battery.

I've went with the optima route. Usually battery specialty places carry small amounts of 6v car batts. At my local store I bought a 6v 8000amps optima for only $104.00 plus tax guy made a deal since it was the last one on the shelf. Also making batt holders for the small optimas are easy ive made a more than decent one with spare scrap "L" shape Aluminum rail and a box of steel rivets.

Thanks everyone. I will check Optima via Amazon.com and return to the NAPA store with the Interstate 2-XHD number to see about special ordering. The only Interstates in the NAPA catalog had the posts in the wrong place. But this 2-XHD was not in the list.

BTW, I am in Metro DC. Nearest TSC is one hour away - one way.

An Optima and an alternator will solve all your problems. Put your charger away. Pics are old engine and new engine.

Advance Auto Parts carries a 6 volt battery,- model 1-1. I have one in my 51 Pacemaker
now. I have had in the past an Optima and a Interstate battery model 1XHD ( a little more power than the group 1). All batteries regardless of make are listed by common group size. Advance batteries are made by the company that makes Interstate's. I work for Advance Auto Parts.

My car is still 6 volt and I have never had a problem. Two batteries have lasted ten years each and the one in it now is 3 years old. I do not remove it in the winter, nor have I disconnected it. I had it out for a couple months this year while I was painting and detailing the engine.

Jim, Thank you for sharing. I will print this off for the desk monkeys. They typed in 1950 Hudson Pacemaker and said "We don't carry any battery." This will show them they need to quit relying on the computer to answer all the questions.

Put an interstate battery in mine last year. Local auto repair shop ordered it and it was in the next day. About $110 as mentioned above.
The dealers are all over the place. You can search at this link:

Interstate 2-XHD now in my possession. I was able to get it directly from the regional warehouse 4 miles from the house.
