Stepdown Radio power source

Putting the finat touched to the Pacemaker re-wiring. What is the draw of the radio? Reason is I am not sure if this should be powered off the ignition switch or direct from the circuit breaker. I do not want to damage the ignition switch by excessive current if it is not designed for the radio current.

I rewired my car and pretty sure it is off the ACC on the ignition switch. There is a 14A inline fuse for the radio. My car is the 1950 Pacemaker Deluxe. One change was that I have an ignition switch from a 52-54 car (retained the starter button), but I don't think that will make any difference. I believe the Hudson manual does state how to do the wiring for the radio, although it is not shown on the basic wiring diagram.

Many thanks for your input guys. There is no accessory stage on the ignition key, so to the circuit breaker terminal it has gone.

I have been told those old radios draw about 5-8 amps most of the time, with a 14-amp fuse for protection. They were wired off the ign switch, but, if in doubt, wire it direct. Just don't forget and leave it on !!! (LOL)

Thanks rbennett47, I have done it direct for now but was concerned re "leaving it on" as flat batteries are no good to anyone. I would prefer to go thru the switch as a safety measure but was concerned re the switch's current capability.

Every stepdown I've ever owned has had the radio wired through the switch. I think that probably was a feature as soon as radios in cars started being more common, for the very reason you stated: flat batteries. We converted our '54 Hornet to 12V several years ago, and have been running the radio through the ignition with no problem. If you're running a lot of extras though, there are aftermarket devices that will take the load off the ign switch with relays...good luck.
