Axle bearing location
-
I have been rebuilding the rear end on a '49 super six and the outer axle bearings no longer press on the axle shafts...you can slide them anywhere you like. Makes for easy assembly but I don't think that's very practical. At any rate I'm going to have the axles built up and machined to press the bearings on but I am in need of a dimension. Anyone know what the position of the bearing should actually be from the end of the threads or the shoulder where the taper starts?
-
syd, those bearings should have a tapered hole that mates up with the tapered part of the shaft. They're not really a press fit, though once they've been on the axle for a while they may be stuck on there pretty firmly. When reinstalling them they should seat nicely on the tapered part of the axle (I assume you're not trying to put 25877 bearings on there vs. the proper 25877T).

Park,
Thanks for the reply....I'll check the bearing number tonight....that may be the entire problem..
