Forum suggestions/feature requests

Please place your constructive suggestions in to this thread and we will prioritize, if you have an issue relating to your use of the forum, please use the contact us page and we will work specifically on your issue, this is for features you'd like to see.Classic Car Lover
-
It would be nice to stay logged in, or add a login on the forum screen. I seem to have to login everytime I come back. Before it kept me logged in.Six in a row makes it GO!
-
Thanks GrimGreaser, that's already in the pipeline on the known issues/updates post.Classic Car Lover
-
Would be nice to be able to change our 'Display Name' ourselves, without 'Administrator' or 'Moderator' assistance.
-
Thanks Rick, that's now on the known issues/updates post.Classic Car Lover
-
Will we be able to get a print version of these threads like we did on the old site?
thanks
J Lombard -
@J Lombard I've looked that up, and it seems as a feature it was dropped in the latest versions of Kunena (the old version of the forum software). Could you instead copy and paste into Word, or some other text editor?
-
If it's not supported by this forum software, we'll look at building that feature ourselves. I can understand that certain threads are best digested away from the screen.Classic Car Lover
-
Can we restore having the box at the bottom right that let you one-click to get back to the main Hudson Forum quickly? That was the most convenient and useful gadget I can think of. Park W
-
Wher is the CHAT line? I miss Alex B and Jon B, Well most of the other H E T ers !

Guys, I'm a newbie at forums. How do I go about posting a picture with an article I've written about a Hudson Essex Service sign dedication?
Bob C. -
test post
-
Bob C - there's a video guide on how to post at Forum 'how to' videos
In a nutshell, click the Start A New Discussion button (top right of this page), be sure to put it in under the Hudson area, type your text in the Write Comment box, and click the Image button (third from the right on the top of the Write Comment box) to add your image. Press Post Comment, and it's done. -
Scott-
Received this on Facebook:
"FYI
Im having the same trouble as some others but now I cant Log in with my new User Name and Password or with my old User Name & Password. I read in 'Discussions' to let the Adminstrator know of problem then they will work on specific individual problems... However, I cant access the Forum to 'Post my Problem'.............
Could someone please let them know in my behalf that I would like access into the Forum and my old User Name back (Ol Racer)
Thanks,
Chuck Vorse"
Scott, please let me know when you get this taken care of and I will let OldRacer know. Thanks!
Russell -
I would like my original avitar back, access to my PMs and whatever status when switch took place.
-
Hi Russell. We tried writing to Chuck yesterday, to give him a temporary password that would allow him back in, however the email to him bounced.
Can you also let Chuck know that I have tried just now to write to him from one of my other email addresses (not associated with Classic Car), to see if that gets around the bounce problem.
Speaking of Facebook, we do have a Facebook Classic Car Page (link will open in a new window) that can be used to contact us, etc. -
Thank you Scott! I sent him your message via Facebook and gave him the link to contact you through that venue.
-
No problem! The email I sent hasn't bounced this time, so hopefully Chuck can login successfully very soon.
-
the search function isn't as useful as the previous one. I don't seem to get what I'm looking for.
Ed -
@Edwardjohnsr So I can have a look at this, can you provide an example, or examples, of the search not working as well as it might?
-
I cannot get to the top or first thread of a discussion when I want to refresh my memory as to exactly what the first part of the discussion started out as. Sometimes they tend to get a little off-course as you know.

Just an FYI, from what I am seeing -
I see 'Bookmark' is working (somewhat) - Although I cannot see the icon (?), when I place my mouse pointer to the right of the 'Options' area, it prompts to 'Bookmark' or 'Unbookmark'.
I also am getting pop-ups (once in a while, have to watch for them), and a little red number (beside my login) on those 'Bookmarks', telling me how many new ones I have. -
"Amen" to Jetman's comment. I opened this thread which has about 22 responses, yet I can only see the last 8-1/2 comments on the page. The top comment is cut off, even with the vertical slide bar pushed to the top.
How are we to view earlier comments in this thread? -
Jon & Jerry,
Yup, same issue. Several others have experienced it as well - there is another 'thread' in discussions on this. When I hit the 'refresh' button (F5 on IE), I was able to see the whole thread - sometimes...
However, about half the time, I get a notice that there is an error, and the IE session has closed. I click 'ok', and it 'recovers' my last session - again, sometimes...
You'll also note that you can't see your individual bar at the top (with Dashboard, Discussions, Name, etc.), and the right bar (with various makes, other discussions, etc.,) is also missing too...
Oddly enough, that issue appears to go away if not logged-in (?)
Rick -
I'm also seeing these issues. I'll have the technical wonks look into it, with a high priority.
-
Now that the "big problems" are solved, I'd still like to put in a vote for tweaking the "look" of each forum, to make it immediately clear to everyone, which particular Forum they're viewing. This could be as simple as adjusting the font sizes.
For example: tune into the Ford forum. The most important information information you should know is that you're on the Classiccar Forums, and specifically that you're on the Ford Forum.
Okay, the largest typeface (and it's at the top of the page) is Classiccar.com -- that's fine!
The second largest typeface you see is 'Dashboard = Discussions - Activity - Inbox - (Your username)" -- this gives undue prominence to something that's really just a control lever. Like putting your car radio right behind the steering wheel, and moving the speedometer over to the glove box.
The third most prominent typeface you see is the file tab "All Discussions". This is confusing, because this is NOT the forum which is entitled "All Discussions". That is somewhere else! I'd remove this tab, personally.
Then we come to the teeny-tiny type: "Classic American Cars >> Ford Motor Company." THIS is actually the title of the page but it's the smallest thing on it!
The title of each thread (below that) is actually larger than the name of the Forum!
In my humble opinion, at the very least, "Ford Motor Company" should be the second largest font on the page. "Dashboard - Discussions - etc." should be reduced. (We'll find it. Believe me!) And even the individual thread titles could be reduced slightly and they'd still be prominent.
When someone enters the forum they should immediately know which forum they've entered, and I think that with a couple subtle improvements, there would be no confusion on this point.
Anyway, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it...
-
Re. only seeing the last post, try it again now guys - we have just put in a fix on this. Just to be sure, refresh the page when you next visit, and it will be fine.
And Jon, we are already looking at some new themes that address some of the very things you mention. -
Why can't I load a 1.24MB pdf file as part of a post? It says "uploading in the little box but never completes. I've tried doing it on 2 different computers. One running XP Pro & the other VISTA Business. Both have Firefox as a browser. I've been able to load jpg files without problem.
ThanksDave Y

KEEP Me Logged in Please.
Why only a session based login? I'd prefer a "Remember Me" checkbox so I don't have to constantly login.
Thanks! -
When I'm typing a message, the whole page jumps. I have to scrool to find it. Is it fixable?

Essx28-1 - investigating this now.
rambos_ride - this is in our known issues list.
denverslim2 - please reply to our email, tech support is easier that way. If you are having issues with your email then please use the contact page as above.

I'd like to see a feature added that would allow me to go directly to the first of the new threads, rather than having to scroll all the way down. It's nice to be able to review the entire discussion, but I'd also like to have the feature I mentioned aboveJerry

Any chance that we'll be getting our 'myGarage' back?
How about a photo area, to store, keep or post our vehicles, projects, etc.?
-
Would it be possible to change all the gray and green print to dark black print. It would make reading easier.
When I click on PM's sent to me, classiccar.com page comes up on the screen instead of the PM messages. Thanks for any help you can provide. Lee O'Dell -
@53jetman - yes, we are working on this.
@46HudsonPU - this is in our medium term plans to bring back in a more integrated way with the rest of the site.
Lee ODell - We will look at optimising the colour scheme once we're a bit further down the track.Classic Car Lover -
@BenFlux - Thank you. Not really too concerned about 'myGarage', other than the 2,500 or so photos in around 10 different folders that I had there. I had referred-to or linked-to them quite often in my previous posts and threads, (as I would now, as well), however they do not appear to be available any longer.
-
I don't seem to be receiving pm's to my inbox ???
-
Rick, you ask about a photo area. Not meaning to hijack this thread, but we do have a Hudson photo site where one can have one's own album, it's at http://hudsonpix.multiply.com/ . It's linked from the main H-E-T page.

Ben, with the Hudson forum having a global membership, its very useful to readily know a member's general location, assuming of course they have volunteered that info. One scenario is where people looking for parts, if they need something heavy and they are not too far away you can offer to help, alternatively if they are a long way away and/or overseas there is usually little point in responding.
In one of the earlier versions of this forum, member location was displayed up front with the user name, but looking around in this forum I can't even see a where location can be entered. Or am I just being dense at the moment?
Bob Ward, Laidley, SE Queensland -
Hi Bob. The solution for that is I think to make use of the ability to add a 'signature' to your posts. If you click your user name and go to your profile page, there's an option there 'Signature Settings'. Those that want to make their location known, or the model(s) of Hudson, Essex, Terraplane, etc that they own, etc. I could, for instance, add "The Blues for State of Origin 2012!" as a signature to my posts. :)
Can I also suggest you take the space out of your username - it would allow me to have used the @ reply feature, and you would have been alerted that I had replied to you. -
Will the chats return? I saw someone else ask but didn't see a response. Thanks
-
I'm having a very difficult time using the "SEARCH" controls. I can't get any listing of posts relating to my search criteria or to anything other than the first original posts for that day.
What gives with the SEARCH, if it doesn't work?
THANX! -
I don't enjoy coming here now, it is so user unfriendly and odd. I don't want to feel like this, I want to feel like coming here.
The format is unsuitable for old cars. The colour, the way it is arranged, the very logic used to create this site. By comparison the old site looked much more modern, professional, well arranged in sections, PM's were properly archived and it was logical and satisfying to use. This site looks like something for young kids. I cannot accept that it has been professionally designed. That is not possible, sorry to say. I suspect that someone is learning as they go here. With many very nice forum templates readily available it is inexplicable why this has been imposed.
I know I'm not alone in saying these sorts of things. In the first place, why fix something if it isn't broken? It's like pulling apart a perfectly running old car and in the process of "improving" it, turning it into a botched hot-rod complete with a fluorescent colour scheme.
Sorry you designers, but you've gone backwards in a big way in my honest opinion.
My suggestion is to ditch this forum layout and adopt a popular tried and tested one like thousands of other forums have. I don't see that this layout will ever be acceptable or functional to your forum members.
-
@bigboy308 Yes, we have found a problem with Internet Explorer and the search function. It's been ticketed, and the developers will attend to it. In the meantime, it will work if you press the Enter button on your computer to start the search, rather than the green 'Go' button. Also, if using a multiple word search term put a '+' in front - i.e. +dove gray
-
Just a word to our forum members: let's remember that this forum is a service provided for free to us Hudson enthusiasts, by Classiccar. Our previous forum format did have some problems and this is a good-faith effort by Classiccar to improve on that format. Let's admit, although the old format had tons of features (many of which were of dubious value....remember "karma"?), it also abounded with a lot of advertising (which helped to pay for the forums) and the whole thing could at times be a matter of "visual overload".
I am pretty sure this format was not designed by Classiccar, it was simply purchased as a "package", just as the previous one was. Therefore, there is a limit to the number and type of "tweaks" that they can make. Let's keep the criticism positive and helpful (which it is, for the most part), and continue to help the fine folks at Classiccar to fine-tune this thing so that it is ultimately completely user-friendly. -
Firstly, thanks to Jon for the voice of reason here. To which I will add a few other points.
The "if it ain't broke don't fix it" comments - you may not have seen it on the front end, but the back-end of the forum was more than a little bit broken. A quite major change took place in 2009, that can be traced directly as a cause of some of the changeover issues we faced. Also, the forum is a part of the ClassicCar site. As the site changed - and it had to change, as we added content, took off ads, added classifieds - so too did the forum need to change, both on a software level, and on a design level. The old site was essentially stagnant in terms of content. There's already a lot more content on the site than there used to be, and we have only just begun. And if any of you would like to author some articles for publication on the site, I'd be happy to discuss this with you.
Design - I've worked in book, magazine and web publishing, for 15 years or so. In every publication I've worked on, in every industry, I've come to know that designers are better at design than I. This has been especially been driven home to me on my own site I work on in my spare time - thankfully designers have offered me advice and help, rather than just let me loose with my rudimentary Photoshop and Illustrator skills. We publisher and content types suggest changes, sure, but then designers always take the comments and make things even better than we had envisaged with our feedback. As for opinions of colour, that's subjective. We've had user testing sessions conducted on the site - the whole ClassicCar site - for months, and the opinion on the look has been almost unanimously positive. Still, we continue to welcome any constructive criticism from all comers.
Forum layout - as Jon B mentioned above, the forum we have have right now was a template, that has to a point dictated the layout. That said, having the forum up now, using it ourselves, and talking with the moderators and forum members, we can see that we can make the main forum page better - for instance bigger heading fonts, more distinction between topic areas. Just give us a little time to move to this, and it is something we will be discussing with the Moderators prior to pushing this change live.
So, in closing, I would again ask for patience, and understanding. Issues with the forum are becoming fewer, and from what we can see there are a lot of forum members back in the swing of things, discussing classic cars freely and widely. And we're seeing a real upswing in traffic across the board, which we're pretty chuffed about. Again, this is early days, but the new site already has considerably more content than did the old,and we hope in addition to the forum you enjoy the other parts of the site.
As regards our commitment to the forum, both Ben and I worked long hours over every day of the Easter break rather than spending time with our families. Even the other day when this latest burst of critique occurred, when I was corresponding with a few of you, and investigating issues, I was doing so at 2.00 in the morning, and then again yesterday on what was a public holiday.
Lastly, please know that in addition to being 'web' guys, Ben and I are huge classic car fans. -
Will it be possible to have the sign in "rectangles" be made visible wherever sign in is printed. That way I can sign in right then. The way it is now, I click on "sign in" and the screen goes thru two pages to another "sign in", one rectangle is barely visible and the other is not. Only then can I sign in. It would become quicker to get to my favoite forum or any other forum if the change can me made.
I have the Hudson forun as a Favorite. So I can go directly to the Hudson forum. I would like to be able to sign in when it says sign in. Thanks for your help.
I'm slowly getting the hang of this new format. I still have more to learn. Thanks for your effort to sort out the kinks and helping us sort out something new and diffenent. I made it through the last change while the kinks were ironed out. I will get thru this change also. Haveing the suggestion box available helps. Thanks.
Have a good day.
Lee O'Dell -
Hi Lee. Yes, at some point a little way down the road we will be providing the ability to login on the Forums pages themselves, rather than having you go to a sign in page and then navigate to the Forums.
I'm pleased to hear that you're making headway with all of the 'new', and if we can help at all please let us know, either here, or via our Contact Us page.
