31 Marvel Carb?

Hello, I just talked to a guy at the carb shop and he thinks that a marvel carb will always leak. I have a marvel on my 31 Essex Coupe that leaks and would like to know if anyone knows how to fix this issue? I found a carb kit for it but if it won't fix the leak why spend the money. Better spent on a Fire Extinguisher. I'm also looking for a trunk latch and handle if anyone has a spare just laying around the barn. Thanks!

Two ways to fix that problem. Years ago a fellow down east made what are called Grose jet needle and seat assemblies. Since I have seven '31 Essex cars I bought a dozen of them. They are a neoprene and brass needle and seat. End of the problem. He has since died, but another person has since started making a similar item. It's in the WTN. Another way is to put on one of those electric shut-off switches that are sold everywhere for model A's. I have installed them for others with good results. The quality isn't high (they're Chinese) but the idea is a good one.

By the way, there were two different handles used. The one like 1930, and the curved one like Hudson used. I have the first one.

How does it leak (or where)? My 1930 Essex would leak when I had an electric fuel pump on it. When I found a good Vacuum Tank and put it on, it solved my problem. Have not had any leaking issues since (about 10 years).

Metal needle and seat. Out of seven, I have two that do not leak. They have on them the only two NOS carbs I've ever found, so there is little or no needle wear. However, I don't trust them either and I normally shut the gas off when I know they'll sitting for an extended period. Beats the heck out of priming the vacuum tank. I keep thinking I should change them too, but can't bring myself to do so while they are still usable as is.

Good information from you guys. I have a electric fuel pump that someone put on the car prior to my purchase. This may work good but I think I'm getting to much fuel to the carb and it is flooding out. I'll have to test the fuel pressure in the next couple days because I already have the fuel pump set at 2 PSI Try to climb a hill no way. Second gear is ok but get into third and no umph. One thing at a time. First concern is saftey, so I would like to fix the fuel leak from the carb. It's leaking from the gasket for sure and flooding out the air filter. May be a float problem. It's a Marvel!
I have no idea what the trunk handle should look like because the car didn't have the correct handle. The handle was the acorn style I think from a 28. So I'm open to suggestions of what to use for a trunk latch and if I come across the correct handle even better yet.

Acorn style was 29. 28 had the coffin style handles.

if you have the 30 style handle (coffin type) there is a matching handle in the same style
if its the Hudson handle 31 handle the, r/seat /boot handle is convex shape with a fine rebate detail around the edge (extremely hard to find )

Your float level is probably set too high.
If you're stuck in a hole, stop digging.

Thanks for the pictures of the handles. When I hear that the parts are rare I get really excited. It could be months or years before I find what I'm looking for. It only took me forty years to find the 31 Essex coupe.
Is anyone else using a neoprene and brass needle and seat
in there carbs. I looked in the WTN but didn't come up with anything.

Try this. When I clean_up and seal my Marvel cards...and others for that matter... I use valve lapping compound on the needle and seat. Get a good clean seal and the leak down when sitting goes away. When completed would should be able to blow against the valve without leakage this is done with the valve properly hooked up, the car sitting upright, while pushing gently downing the needle.
