Water Outlet Manifold Gasket

    Over the last year, I've developed a coolant weep around one the risers on the water outlet manifold on our mostly original '30 Essex. I finally got around to pulling it off and cleaning the mounting surfaces on the manifold and head but was wondering about what type of gasket to use to remount it. I've got some sheet 3/16" cork from a couple years ago that I could use to cut gaskets from or could I get away with a silicon gasket maker? Thanks.

    That 3/16" material is a little thicker than the original but should work O.K. I'd use the silicone to seal it to the block and cover, kinda belt and suspenders.

    Thanks Marconi I wanted to use what I had if possible. Also you anwswered a second question on if I should use a sealant with the cork gasket on this water manifold. Looking for a permanent repair.

    If I used gaskets I'd use a much thinner material and not cork.
    If it were me I'd put the thinnest smear of 'The right stuff' sealant on the
    water manifold and bolt it on without gaskets. Shouldn't be hard to seal seeing
    as there is no pressure on the cooling system.On my bad head I had a couple cracks
    around the water manifold studs but they went from the stud to the coolant hole and
    the manifold would cover them.

    3/16" cork is far too thick, and will squash out. Use a good quality paper-based gasket, 1.2 mm thick and as advised, use a thin smear of silicone or flange sealant on both surfaces. I would advise against using just silicone, as even a small amount of misalignment or distortion could lead to the ears breaking off. Using a gasket allows for a little error.

    I defer to Geoffs advice. As long as the water manifold is,it makes perfect sense to
    allow a little 'give' for misalignment.

    Anyone know if there is a torque sequence on the studs on these water manifolds? With six separate risers I would hate to have one crack when it gets hot. Would it be like head bolts starting inside and working out?
