The official thread about the new look forum
-
The official line:
---
"ClassicCar.com has been a well-regarded, and highly visited site since 1996. It has had a long-running online forum, 10,000 strong, that has long been the place for experts and beginners alike to express their passion and knowledge for all things classic car.
The year 2012 sees ClassicCar.com under new ownership, and with that a comes a fresh, new look. In addition to the new look, the new ClassicCar.com will have more of everything. More news, more articles, and, in the biggest change, thousands of classic cars for sale - and listings are free! Whether you want to buy or sell a car, as a private seller or as a dealer, you can list cars for free on ClassicCar.com
All of that, and all of the many years of forum questions and answers - the forum may look a little different, but the content and the community is as strong as ever."
---
Well, here we are loyal Forum members - thank you for your ongoing patience as we work to enable all the content, private messages and functions you are used to from the previous platform.
Whilst we understand that sudden change is not always easy, it will be for the greater good as we look to expand ClassicCar.com and the services we provide to the community we are passionate about.
We invite your constructive comments below so that we can prioritise the work over the next few days.

Welcome to the new look ClassicCar.com Forums.

Hi Ben,
I like the new layout and its great to see all the new classifieds and features around the site.
Cheers. -
Howdy Ben! Well, it's always a learning curve, but we'll get there. Is it possible for a user to change the theme of the layout?
Anyway, so far, so good, still navigating and trying to find my way around. -
Hi RL Chilton,
At this time it's not possible to adjust the theme, however if demand dictates we'll certainly investigate.Classic Car Lover -
Is it possible to change one's user name - I'd rather use my old one HudsonTech. When I went to set up my account it wouldn't take my old user name, had to use my email.

Consider it done, if others need it then i'll look to allow it through the permissions.Classic Car Lover

Thanks Ben - appreciate it.

Is there no longer a 'quote' option? I feel like I went from a gentlemen's study/library, with oxblood leather chairs (the old forum colors). To a tween age girls room with the baby blue and pea soup green and bright yellow highlighter, (the new layout colors). ...Hmmm. Well maybe this super bright white background will blind me enough that I won't spend so much time here.
Guess what. The new layout? ...I don't like it. -
Well, it looks as though our signatures are now back attached to our posts. Good work, guys, keep it up.
Is there going to be a way to "quote" a post or partial-post like we had before? That's a very handy feature.
-
I Lost my " Handle " (lostmind ). I am now Roy , which is ok , I've been Roy for 67 years.
I put a post here with no problem ,but now I can't find a place to start a new thread.
Also there is "discussion " , General disscussion. and one other.
Which are we going to use? I know it's going to take a while , but each time
I come back it's different. Not bad , just different. Roy -
Roy-
Look for the big green rectangle in the upper right that says, "Start a new Discussion". Clicking inside the rectangle will start a new thread. -
Thanks , I knew I posted before, I'm just used to everything being in one place.
I guess I gave in to frustration.
We'll all get it figured out by helping each other.
They seem to be improving it by the hour.
Thanks again Mr. Chilton

Hi,
Think you've made an error under 'Hudson' - You've made it into a major category, and users are unable to post new discussion threads there.
'Hudson' is an 'Orphan Marque' - although by the number of threads it appears to be a major area. That is only due to the number of Hudson members.
Users should be able to post new discussions in this area. The two sub-areas 'street rods' and 'discussions' were created to separate discussion areas.
- 'Street Rods' was intended for modified Hudson discussions, which tend to get negative posts by traditionalists (therefore the sub-category);
- 'Discussions' was intended for off-topic discussions, shooting the bull, etc.
Please check with Jon Battle or another Moderator - they are very familiar with the Hudsons area... -
Is there no longer a 'quote' option?
This has been added - as you'll see above, just use the " icon. We will make this even better soon.I Lost my " Handle " (lostmind ). I am now Roy
Roy, would you like to be lostmind again?'Hudson' is an 'Orphan Marque' - although by the number of threads it appears to be a major area.
This has been fixed as you'll see in the navigation.
We're still here, all weekend, working to make things right.Classic Car Lover -
Thanks Ben to you and your crew!
Another one for you: Previously, we had a "My Garage" area where pictures could be kept, peoples blogs were located, your list of "Friends" was associated with this area, etc. I know several folks had their blogs located in that section and represented literally years worth of work. I have gotten several e-mails regarding this subject specifically.
Is the "My Garage" going to continue, or something similar? What about the blogs that were located there? -
Just started posting. First, thank you (Classiccar) for all your efforts, I understand you've been up until pretty late in the morning getting this thing to work! Take a nice long Easter weekend and refresh yourselves!
I also see that (in the last hour or two) you've restored "HUDSON" to its status as an actual forum category, that's good! And the thirty seconds it took me to switch from forum to forum is way down now, another improvement.
Here are a few comments or questions offered in the spirit of helpfulness. These are entirely my own thoughts, maybe no one else is concerned with them...
1). Could there be a positive way to establish that a person has successfully signed in? It used to say "Welcome, Jon B" and then I knew I was signed in. Now it's a guessing game.
2). Has the chatroom feature been jettisoned, or will it eventually be coming back?
3). Is there an "operator's manual" somewhere here, for newbies and bewildered oldies?
4). I, too, feel that the colors and layout could benefit from a designer's touch. The colors remind me of shag carpeting and 1970's kitchen appliances! The lettering on the forum lists, ought to be black, not in green. And, yes, I am blinded by the white background on which the postings are made -- a slight tint would be helpful. This is all secondary to the good operation of the forum, though!
5). The term Discussions is used in a number of places and may be a bit confusing. Under Hudson, might the divisions be called Street Rods and "Off Topic", or something like that? I think a lot of people post things there, that might be more appropriately placed in the regular "Hudson" forum.
6). "General Topic Area" has confused some Hudson people in the past, who got lost when navigating the forums. They thought they were in the "general" Hudson topic area! Would it make sense to say "General Topics -- all makes" or something like that?
Okay, you have work to do so I'll shut up. Anyway, thanks for your superhuman effort to get this monster off the ground, during the past two or three days! -
Another couple questions:
1). Have we lost the chatrooms? Or are they only gone temporarily?
2). Is there still a private message feature and if so, where do we go to check our PM's?
3). Are the same people designated as moderators as before? And if so, how do they claim their moderator status, and where are the levers that they pull? -
Change is always tough - this is the first time it has sort of worked for me - all it did at first was the 5 or 6 times it seized up and crashed my computer ! I am always leery when I see that a favorite website is going to be improved or updated. As an old dog learning new tricks we will just have to see. I need to be more patient; on the other hand I saw nothing wrong with the old site. Gert Kristiansen

Nothings changed for me!!! I've been confused most of my life. LOL
Ah, well, it's just something else to learn. I've been looking to buy a new computer since my old one up and died on me a couple weeks back. So I rented this Acer Aspire for a week. I can see I'm REALLY going to have a learning curve when I do buy my new one. I'm to damned old to change!!!!!!!!
Hudsonly,

Some of these topics go into detail about a specific parts or piece. If the pictures are all small, as it currently seems to be, it's going to take away from what some one is trying to show in a photo.
I noticed this as I was looking back at some old build threads on here. The pictures that showed good detail before, are now too small to see what's going on. Clicking on the pictures do not make them any bigger. -
Hello
Is it possible to change one's user name - I'd rather use my pierre from france. When I went to set up my account it wouldn't take my old user name, had to use my email.
Pierre
-
Ben, we did have a box at the end of any threas we're looking at, providing a way to one-click back to the main forum page. That was very convenient. Can we get that back?
-
No indicators of new posts - that I can see?
Category UI layout on the right...
The navigation layout is not very intuitive - Why is there no navigation but the right side Categories list?
User friendly sites have relevant breadcrumbs on the top and bottom of the main content for navigation in the forum.
If you use laptop or below a 20" monitor - you have to continually scroll to get to the most used categories on the site - HUDSON, you're not maximizing the layout or traffic for your advertisers or "upgraded users"
-
One thing i would really like on the new forum is to be able to see whom of my friends are online and it would be great to be able to send an instant message and actually chat with someone instead of just sending an email.
oh and I liked the garage option we had before too, where i can look at other peoples cars and projects.
Just my wish list i know you guys need time to get all the bugs worked out.
Dan -
Pierre from France: I've made that change to your username.
-
Park Waldrop: The Back to Discussions link at the bottom of the page takes you back to the main forum page.
-
Scott:
1). Is there an "instruction manual" here, that newbies and the Clueless Old can consult, for proper operation? A FAQ or "Help?
2). Is there an instruction manual for the moderators? At present I have not a clue as to delete an offensive posting (for example).
Dan, were you aware that the Club has had a chatroom more or less continuously on the internet since the late 1990's? It's temporarily (we hope!) off the air due to the changes at Classiccar. Unfortunately, a link hasn't been placed on the H-E-T homepage yet, but from time to time we have announced it on the Hudson Forum. -
Here's a quick "layout" suggestion, offered in the spirit of helpfulness, not criticism.
Open the Hudson forum (to give an example). Now, look at the page.
Quick!--What forum are you on?
Why, "All Discussions", right? That's what it says on the file tab in large letters just above all the postings!
Nope! Look close. REALLY close! In tiny letters "Orphaned Marques / Hudson".
Ahh! I see!
Okay, so one thing that would make some sense, might be to place the actual name of the particular forum in Boldface at the top of the page -- maybe even in a color (same color for all forums, something unique) which would identify instantly, where you were. The term "discussions" appears in so many places now, that it is becoming somewhat confusing.
But again -- this is a concept I humbly place up for consideration. We are still very grateful for the opportunity to have this forum in the first place, and appreciate all the work that Classiccar has done to upgrade the forums, in the last week. -
I am closing this thread as it's become long enough that we require a couple of threads and a more structured way of seeing what's being worked on and what's coming soon.
All items have been addressed or are marked in the new 'known forum issues' thread:
