Year of Make-Plymouth Fury
-
Hello everyone, I could use a little help in identifying the year of make for this Plymouth Fury driven by Ben Johnson in the 1974 film The Sugarland Express (a great movie for car lovers, by the way!)
I'd love to know which year this model is from. Thanks everyone!

The picture is a little on the blurry side and does not show the grille of the car head on so it's a little difficult to easily identify. That being said, I'm not sure the car is even a Plymouth at all. I think it is a 1972 Dodge Monaco. Maybe someone else can identify the car better than I can. I do remember The Sugarland Express being a good movie and I may just have to drag my tape out and watch it again.

Hi, thanks for the information. Two gentlemen who were displaying their classic cars at the Atlanta Car Show this past weekend identified the car as a Plymouth Fury.
Here is a picture of the front with the grille. It's not much better quality than the first picture, but I hope this helps. I'd really love to know the exact make, model and year of this car. Thanks!

I think the two gentlemen in Atlanta were mistaken about this being a Plymouth Fury. I appear to also have been mistaken about the exact model but I still believe it to be a '72 Dodge, only a Polara, not a Monaco as I stated earlier. In fact, the black spots directly above the grille of the car are the spread out letters spelling DODGE. Go to google.com, look for images of a '72 Polara and you will find this car. There is an exceptionally good picture of a gold one in particular. The picture shows the grille and the DODGE lettering very well.

hrallan, thanks so much -- I think you've got it!
I looked up pics of the '72 Dodge Polara and it does seem to match. That gold one is really pretty though it's a two-door -- but it's the same in every other respect. I looked for other Polara pictures too. The real giveaway is the rear tire well -- the Polara is the first one where it's the same design as the car in the movie.
Thanks so much for all your help. -
You are quite welcome. Just one other thing....when I check the images of a 1972 Dodge Polara, the one on the far right end of the first row of cars is the gold one that I referred to and it is a four door just like the blue one in your pictures. Perhaps your browser returns them in a different order or such but regardless, I do think we have identified the car for you now.
