I think the 1930's, oddly enough considering the country was in a depression, was the height custom built cars - late 20's into the early 30's at any rate. You look at pictures of them and see them in museums and they are beyond mere cars - they are works of art.
I read somewhere that Fatty Arbuckle bought large cars because of his size. Altho many of the great customized cars of that era were huge compared to anything else on the road then, and pretty much now.
