What year engine do I have?

I purchased a 1946 Hudson Big Boy Pick up. If I am correct the serial number is supposed to be the same as the engine number. Well it is not. The engine number is 159659. The vehicle number is 3873708. It appears to me the engine is a 1940 engine and not a 1946 engine. I'm confused. Need to know which year engine to be able to tune it properly. Help Please.

At this point in time its not surprising a motor could have been changed. And if you have a pick-up with an 8 it is for sure not original motor.Unless its not realy a truck but a modified car,

That engine number doesn't seem to match up with any year's number format. Are you sure you're looking at the engine serial nr.?

Actually that number, 159659, does match up with March 1952 Ser No's 152065 to160796. If that is indeed the case then the engine is either a 232, 262 or 308.

You have a very good looking truck. Have a good time cruising around in it. Thank you for sharing the photo with us.

In addition to Alex information look at the side of the block about 2 1/2 inches above the oil pan. If there is a 1/2" casting protruding the lenght of the engine it is a 308 engine. If it is not there it is either a 232 or 262 which will have the engine size cast on the head.

But heads have been know to be interchanged between 232, 262, and 308 engines.

    Have a good day.

Guys there are no numbers on block on the side it is supposed to be on for that year(46)which is supposed to be on the block between exhaust ports 1 and 2. The only numbers I see are on the driver side of engine block (165610) with a CWG under it and a number 1 directly under CWG. Here are some photos

No, I dont think I am. I pulled that number off the top of the engine. But the only numbers on the block that are visible are in the photos I posted

Somebody smarter than me should take a look, but I think thats a "splasher" 6- pre 1948- from the water jacket on the side- so it wouldn't be a 308, even though it has a rib.

Do you mean you pulled that number from the top of the block? Or from the cylinder head?

With the dist at the rear of the cyl head it's a 40 to 47 engine. It could be the original engine or a replacement engine, i.e. a Sears reman engine, etc.

The engine # you want is stamped in the top of the block between the first two exhaust ports.

The first number on my first post was off the top of the cylinder head. I think that was incorrect. The only number on the block is the number shown in the photo which is 165610. I do not see any numbers on the other side between exhaust ports one and two or on that side of the engine at all. Thats why I'm thinking its not the original engine. But simply trying to figure out which engine it is.

That's not the engine number, it's the casting number, and I would venture to say you have either the original engine, or a replacement of the correct type.

It looks just like my 1947 PU engine. The engine # is located on the top of the cylinder block, right side, between numbers one and two exhaust ports. That is where mine is right next to the head.

If the paint is thick you may have to scrape it off to see the number.

Your engine looks very much similiar to the engine in my '46 Hudson pickup (picture of my truck's engine below). As has been previously stated, I believe the engine in your truck is either the original engine, or a replacement engine (212 cu in, flathead six, 'splasher').

If the engine has been rebuilt and the block decked then the numbers could have been removed by the cutter.

I do not thick you will have a problem using 46-47 engine specs. Its not likely someone would put in an earlier engine.

Thanks for the pics, I'm hoping its original. Can someone please send me a pic with someone pointing at the location of where the number should be on the engine. I would be o so grateful. I know I'm asking a lot but I think like you said it might be painted over. The engine paint seems rather thick.

In this photo I am pointing at a series of numbers on the top of the engine cylinder head. Is this the correct location?

Move your finger back toward yourself and let it drop down to the block. That small machined flat is where I belive everyone is trying to tell you,

Move your finger back towards you and when you come to the end of the cylinder head, move finger forwards along the head and when you come to the second head stud the number will be stamped in the flat surface of the block between 1and 2 exhaust ports. Use a small wire brush and clean the surface good. Walt.

Got it, Got it!!!!!!!!!!!! the paint is so thick I can barely see one of the numbers, I will wire brush it some in the a.m. Wow, what a relief. Thanks everyone. The engine runs good, needs a carburetor though, so does anyone know where I can find a rebuilt one.

Walt (previous post) rebuilds them. HETmmordenti@aol.com or HET4158245222 and don't use the HETs.

BTW, when you get around to it, send me Name, address and Serial No and I'll add you to the truck registry. HETcramerlp@roadrunner.com (minus the HET)

Specifically the engine comes from a 1947 Hudson built sometime in early April 1947 (serial numbers for April ran from 37414 thru 47480.
