...about putting a fly-cut in the head's combustion chamber to eliminate "ping" when using a 232 head on a bigger engine? It had several pictures too. I've tried searching but I must not be using the right key words. Thanks.

    Roger,
Are you thinking of the "Sommender Singh" groove? Try Googleing it.

There's only one "m"- Somender. Just googling the name will get you a bunch of info.

    Mike,
Have you tried it and if so what were your results? I have,on a 262 head on the 308. I was still working with the Chrysler electronic dist when I ran out of good weather.

I haven't tried it- if I have to remove the head, I probably will, but will do some more research first. Looks like one of those "can't hurt, might help" deals, but IMHO, probably not worth removing the head just for that reason.

Mike, Rudy Bennett told me that he could run much more spark advance with it. That alone should help power and economy. My ears are bad so I have to have someone along to hear pre-ignition and as a result, I've been wondering how I can set up a knock sensor from a late model to turn on a light, send a meter upscale or whatever to indicate preignition.
FWIW, I put the 262 head on after a valve job, reusing the old head gasket which I cleaned and painted with aluminium spray paint, as per Walt Mordenti's suggestion and have had no problems with it. I don't think that the grooves will hurt one bit.

This was done on the small block chevy motors, back in the late 60s, when using the high dome pistons. You have to be sure and not leave any sharp edges as it will create "hot spots" and preignition.. We made the groves a little wider than shown in the videos.
