Fuel out top of carb*FIXED Now NewProb Vapor Lock?
-
So i changed my in carb fuel filter today and now fuel is pouring out of the top of my carb. its a small block 350 with 3 overhead rochester carbs. ***i'm only running one of the three carbs to save fuel. all i did was change the filter. i touched nothing else. after the fuel started pouring out i removed the new auto zone filter and replaced it with one of the original filters from the other carb. started it up and same problem. it's as if something is now blocking the needle valve or a float problem. it just seems odd that it would happen at the same time i changed the filter. tomorrow i will rebuild the carb and see.
has anyone out there experienced this or have any ideas?
thanks in advance!

Could be you have a small burr interferring with the needle valve returning to its seat, Rochester 2GC carbs? Take the top cover off the carb and the needle and seat out and visually inspect it closely.

ok so i found a small piece of metal shaving lodged between the needle and seat. It must have shaved off the piece that unscrews for access to the in carb filter. removed the shaving and no more flooding from the top.

now the new problem. this has been happening for some time now and i can't seem to figure it out...
first thing in the morning the cold start is great. fires right up. once it's warm when i shut off the engine the carb seems to "flood" which could just be a case of vapor lock. i've never experienced vapor lock so i'm not sure?? i can hear a hissing sound coming from inside the carb. after a minute fuel starts to seep out of the bottom of the carb. only a drop or two. once i see this fuel the car will not start unless i wedge open the choke just a bit. then it fires after a few turns. whitish looking smoke comes out the tail pipe right at fire up then it calms down and runs great. it can adjust my choke so it's open just a bit at start up so it will start but then it runs rough (takes a big gasp of air when i hit the gas before going).
i'm so tired of having to mess with my choke on every hot start. the other thing is it doesn't seem to do it all the time which makes it even more confusing to me??? :S -
Do you have a vent on top of the float bowl with a rubber disc that is controlled by the throttle? this would be the bowl vent and if it's there and not working could cause the problem you're having. The other thing is you say you have to block the choke open when the engine is warm? You need to adjust the choke so it's open all the way after the engine is warmed up, otherwise the engine is getting too much fuel, flooding!

Oh Yeah, 'vapor lock' is when the fuel, usually the fuel line, gets so hot that the fuel in it boils and all you have in the line is fuel vapor that the fuel pump cannot get liquid fuel past. In effect your running out of fuel, a tottaly different problem than what you're having.

rebuilt the carb today. we'll see what happens.

The bowl vent is linked to the throttle linkage, it stays closed till the throttle is opened a certain amount, then it opens. It's located right in front of the air hornon top of the fuel bowl. Note that not all carbs have this type of vent, sometime it's a small raised area int he same location with 1 to 3 small holes in the side. The choke should be in the off position for a while after the engine is shut down warm, if it's closing right away you need to adjust it towards 'lean' on the choke housing. This takes a lot of minor adjustments till you get it set p;roperly. You shouldn't have to hold the choke open on a warm engine.
