Dad and I are rebuilding a 65 coupe 289 stang and it will need new exhaust from the exhaust manifolds back. We are going to have the manifolds re-coated but from there its an open canvas. Right now I am just looking at the kits from cal-mustang and the like. We really are open to suggestions and aren't against new headers but dont want to spend a whole bunch replacing the manifolds that are in fine shape.

    thoughts, concerns, suggestions??

we have 2 rear valances, one with cutouts for the lights only, and one with no cutouts at all.

Exhaust systems are a matter of personal taste. My last car was 69 Cutlass W-31 and I put headers on it. I later changed it to the original exhaust manifolds and standard pipes from the local muffler shop. I did have them put on some turbo mufflers to help give it a little sound.

Headers are nice but sometimes give very little room to work in the engine bay or hang a bit to low so you have to watch the speed bumps in parking lots.

You may want to join a Mustang club or be on a message to see what others have done and get the pros and cons.

You have picked and excellent project for you and your dad. Parts availability and support are plentiful for the Mustang. Not to mention the cool factor of a 65 Stang. My brother had one when they first came out. Sure wish I had that car today.

Best of luck with the car and hope the fun doesn't turn into to big a project. Plan your moves carefully to help minimize the mistakes. And when the mistakes happen, just chalk them up a learning experience.
