I have tried to use the private message button and have no idea if it has been sent or not. There is only an X in the upper right and doesn't appear to be a send feature, can anyone advise me what I have to do to send a private message.

Hmmm... I don't have any issues. I don't see any 'sent' notifications, but a copy of the message shows up in MyGarage 'Sent Box'.
When a PM is opened - At the bottom-right of that 'message window', you should see two buttons, 'Send' and 'Cancel'.
I would recommend that you update/upgrade to the latest version of Sun Java -

What browser are you running? Version number of the browser? Ted (web admin) will most likely weigh-in on this...
