positive or negative ground

I am wondering if someone here can tell me if a 1930 essex is positive or negative ground? I removed my battery when i sent my carb to get rebuilt 2 months ago....I just got it back on the super six and forgot which ground was correct,I tried touching the cables both ways and it didnt spark and I know for a fact ford model a are pos ground. the guy who sold it to me said the starter wire goes to the pos post so it would be a neg ground ,opposite of a ford.....anyone help? thanks John

Your Essex is positive ground. Ground the positive terminal of the battery - only.

On our 30 Essex the negative side of the battery is grounded to the frame.Steve

My '33 is negative ground, I'll bet yours is also, but I won't "guess". Do yourself a favor and round up a spec sheet (single page,both sides full of mechanical and electrical specifications) on your '30 Essex,they are easily found on the internet thru literature vendors such as Walter Miller. It would be good to know what year Hudson switched to a Positive ground.

From a 1930 Essex electrical data sheet it says:
BATTERY:—Exide, Type 3-XI-13-1G, 6 volt. The negative (—) terminal is grounded. Starting capacity (20 minute rate) is 98 amperes for 20 minutes. Lighting capacity (5 ampere rate) is 5 amperes for 17 hours. Battery is mounted on the left frame member under the driver's seat.

In fairness to you Richard, Hudson switched over to positive ground with, I believe, the 1934 models. Some electrical whiz kid decided that them little electrons were running around from positive to ground, instead of negative ground thus changing everything around.
