Why Not Arizona?
-
I recall hearing arguments in Pontiac or Spokane which opposed holding the HET International meeting in Arizona due to the exceedingly hot summer temperatures. While I appreciate that point, I find it perplexing that the hot and humid climate we are likely to experience in Oklahoma City might be considered more comfortable. When a member from the audience asked why the convention couldn't be held in Arizona during months when the climate was pleasant no one on the panel responded.
Perhaps someone can provide an historical perspective so I will understand the underlying issues. See you in OKC.

Currently the HET By-laws state "The Annual National Meet should normally be held during the month of July each year, excluding holiday weeks, however, the Annual National Meet may be held during the months of August or September, excluding holiday weeks, for good reason and at the discretion of the Board of Directors"
It is possible to get this changed to include the month of June, but it will take a vote by the board and a vote by the Club Membership at the following year's membership meeting.
If you are interested in making this change to our by-laws, let your HET Regional Directors know.

Las Vegas would be a great place for the National, but only in the cooler months.

Two meets that are held in the warm areas that I have attended are one in Florida (The folks down that way often call it the Winter National and as I remember it was held in January or February) The other one is held each year in Laughlin, Nevada only a short trip to Las Vegas. Might be an intresting discussion for a Board Meeting.Brownie

Matt, I think the change should be put to a vote of the members. The present situation is unfair. Club bylaws require that the annual National Meet must be held in July, August or September, the hottest months for many chapters wanting to host the outdoor event. That means no Meet in the Fall colors of New England or with the roaring falls of Yosemite in the Spring or in the beautiful Southwest or the bright lights of Las Vegas. A greater flexibility in dates would give all HET chapters a chance to host a National Meet.
Other clubs have a greater flexibility with their National Meets.
o June – Oldsmobile Club – Penn
o June - NMCOA – Illinois
o May/June – Studebaker – Arizona
o June – Kaiser-Fraser – Texas
o May – AACA – North Carolina
o June – Corvair – Iowa
o June – Airflow Club – Kentucky
o June – Plymouth – Oregon
o April – Lincoln/Continental – Florida
o May - Lincoln/Continental – So. Calif
o Feb – HCCA – Nevada
o Oct – AACA Hershey – Penn
o Oct – Kaiser-Fraser – Ohio
o Feb – HCCA – Florida
o June – Checker – Illinois
o June – VMCCA – Michigan
o June – Studebaker – Missouri
o June – Thunderbirds – Ohio
Questions are raised about problems like school conflicts, vacation schedules and IRS reporting regulations. Apparently other car clubs have solved those problems. Certainly members of one of the great car clubs (HET) can successfully deal with those problems.
A meet period between May and October would give more chapters a better climate and a chance for better hotel rates for hosting the meet. It is time to give all HET chapters a chance to host the National Meet. Talk to the Directors about fairness and put it to a vote.

Thanks for the great post Bob. I have requested that the subject be put on the agenda for this year's Board of Directors meeting. If it passes there, it can be put to a vote in the General Membership meeting at next year's National Meet in Gettysburg, PA.
If anyone is interested in having June added to the list of months acceptable for a HET National Meet, be sure to let your regional directors know before this year's meet in OKC.

A basic requirement for putting on a National Meet is having a large & viable local chapter to host it. The Grand Canyon Chapter is neither - a rather substantial % of the membership are "snow birds" & aren't even in town in the summer & generally speaking the membership is elderly.
There are areas of the state where it is not ungodly hot in the summer. Prescott would be an exc. place for it (elevation 5000' thus about 10-15 degrees cooler - right now it's about 90 in Prescott as a high but only 65 at night + very low humidity so most comfortable). However, when I was living there, I was 1 of but 2 or 3 members living there, ergo, forget having it there.
Another factor to consider is that the Nationals have become so big they've literally "shot themselves in the foot" as require a huge hotel with a lot of excess parking thus eliminating many areas or small towns/cities that could even properly host one.
First one I attended was at a small motel in Ohio, doubt if there were more than 100 people there, LOL!!!!! -
There is also a issue that the national meet needs to be held after the Regional meets take place. This is having to do with the election of directors.
In theory if the all regionals were all held early enough then the national HET meet could be then scheduled at an earlier date. Be mindful that that is a undertaking that disturbs some traditional meet scheduling.
The directors would need to hear from the membership for action on this matter. -
I've lived in Tucson for almost 20 years. I personally chaired 2 AACA National Meets and the Tucson Region has hosted 6 National meets,1 Grand National, 1 Glidden Tour (VMCCA) 1 Founders Tour and we are working on a National meet in Las Vegas for 2013 with only a membership of 20 families. But, all of those were in April, March or October. Pete, Prescott is beautiful but difficult to get to from the hinterlands. At least Flagstaff is on I -40. And Little America is( or was) able to accomodate a lot of cars. Also a problem in Tucson is the distance from population centers, and that reflects on the small numbers of attendees at meets (about 80-100 cars) Also the age of the members here is old( retirees), but we did sponsor the Western Regional a couple of years ago. The board would need to address the "July only" issue before a location is sought.

If you're thinking about Arizona, I'd say no later than April. Gets well over 100 in May, and by June you're off to the races, temp-wise.
Think San Diego! -
Oh boy, what a hornets nest (pardon the pun). This topic has been discussed for many, many years. The current rules concerning the National are a compromise which has recently been worked out. Prior rules were July and August ONLY. There are passions on both sides of the debate which have caused some real heated discussions at prior business meetings.
A few of the points raised:
Dates should remain as they are:
due to tradition.
to allow families with children to attend during "Summer Vacation"
Traditional vacation times are July and August.
Change Dates:
As the group ages the heat of summer is a problem
Due to Age of membership the "Closed School" issue is invalid
Would allow people to attend who can't get summer vacations.
As you can see, there are points on both sides of the the issue. The Bord of Directors worked hard to come up with a new position. Was it the best? Maybe! Was it a compromise? Certainly.
I don't want to discourage the conversation. I am only trying to bring a bit of history to the posts.
Hope this brings some perspective to the point

Vegas out of the question as no Chapter there to host it.
Laughlin's "Economy Run", which has long been popular with SW HETers (often garners members from Calif., Az., Nevada, & Utah), is always held in Nov.
Any spring or fall time would be a good time here for a National, summer just "out of the question". I went out on the patio at midnight last night, temp. gauge showed 90 & we may be in for "monsoon" weather (2 weeks ago had monstrous dust storm) as big clouds this a.m. which can lead to very heavy winds & rain, a phenomenia of this area from July thru Auguest. -
Right Ken, "oldhudsons" is me, LOL.
Only problem is that Prescott is about 100 miles from Phoenix where the Grand Canyon Chapter is centered. As far as I know I'm the only member who lives there & I don't really live there as rent out part of my home there & spend most of my time in retirement community in suburban Phoenix.
There is one very large hotel/casino with plenty of parking where it could probably be held.
For something like that to occur the Grand Canyon Chapter would have to "get it in gear" & work out all the numerous details & considerations required to even submit a bid for a National. I did a Regional once, at the Lawrence Welk Resort outside of Escondido, Calif. when I lived there, and it's a LOT of work - a National requires a good, energetic, and large Chapter, or chapters, to host one as hundreds of man hours required.
