Timing gear for 37
-
Hi,
I will be tearing down my 37 hudson soon to replace the fiber timing gear. Can anyone tell me a good source to purchase one.
Thanks
Ron -
Don't fool around, get a matched set from Dale Cooper, and if you go aluminum, you have to do work on the front motor plate. Walt

I'd definitely take the opportunity to look for an aluminum timing gear so you can put THAT potential problem to rest in the future. With fiber gears...."it's only a matter of time", unless your car is a trailer queen. Finding a NOS aluminum one (and Walt's right, you have to get the matched set) isn't easy but it's worth the search. I believe these were used in the later 3x5's so possibly you could transplant a good used gear from a parts engine.
By the way, regarding the "front motor plate" mod, you can also have the webs on the aluminum gear machined. This is necessary for clearance of the bolt on the motor plate. Kelly Hinegardner did this for me back in the 1970's and I've been driving with the same aluminum gear since then. -

You can not take any aluminum gear and install it unless it's a matched set. Same with fiber gear, must be a matched set, for if you install just the gear you will end up with a sound that sounds like a knock in the motor. This has drove many mechanics crazy. Aluminum gears are a different pitch than fiber, so don't try to install either without the crank gear. Walt.
