Last week I sent Steve Engel, HET Radio guru, my radio for servicing. I was wrapped well in bubble wrap in an box with more bubble wrap. Steve called yesterday and said it had arrived damaged, luckly I did insure it, but apparently it had been dropped and whacked. Steve has been able to fix the damage but I am hearing more and more that UPS is becoming really unreliable in handling packages. Steve said he now calls them OOPS due to all the radios he had gotten that have had rough treatment. He now recommends USPS (priority mail), FEDEX air or ground service. Oddly I have used USPS and had very good luck with them, except MAKE sure you insure the package, not for damage but for loss. I have had two items just disappear, one a 308 cast iron head! Otherwise the stuff seems to get there in good shape.

Cheer up - better things are coming. FedEx and UPS are talking about merging - the new company to be called FedUp.

I know, I know - old joke. I've not had any trouble with either UPS or FedEx over the years. I do use the post office for mailing books and so-on - I can send that material media rate, which is way cheaper and delivery times nearly equal to first class, depending on distance.

How the hell do you loose a cylinder head in the mail??

I have one for you that just happened last week.

I bought a twin H intake carbs and cleaners from a guy.
I received the package from UPS (sitting on my door step, he never even bothered to ring the door bell because it will take him 3 min. longer) Box looked great.
I started unpacking and noticed i had no carbs, so i jumped the fellow i purchase it from saying that wasn't the deal so on so forth, he said he put the carbs in a separate box inside the big box. I told him NO BOX INSIDE. Basically thinking im gonna get screwed out of this deal. I started to talk with him and ask him in there was any way he could have forgotten to put the small box inside. He says no I have all the parts to the gal behind the counter they boxed it and banded it up. I told him wait a minute this box doesn't have any bands on it.

Basically from my investigation, I looked at the tracking of the package and somewhere along the line it said "cannot read receiving addr" so what they did was scanned the bar code found the correct address replaced the box because im guessing it was destroyed and when they re-boxed it they didnt put the carbs back in. WTF

Lucky i had a really bad feeling and told the dude i bought this from to put insurance on it about 3 times and he did.

So now this is where i sit today, UPS came back and picked up the box and parts so they can do their investigation and then ship it back to the original owner.
Now i have nothing for my money and hope the guy ships atleast the parts he does have. Basically i know im gonna get the shit end of the deal, all because UPS.

Here's how- the parapelegic Lithuanian dwarf the PO hired under the Americans with Disabilities Act was unable to lift it onto the conveyer- the best he could do was push it under a shelf, and move on to the lighter stuff.

And Schillaz, if he insured it, and they are shipping the remains back to him, have him ship them back to you, and the two of you come up with some portion of the price attributed to the lost carbs, and he refunds that amount of the insurance to you.

Make sure Steve gives UPS the bill for fixing their damage to the unit.

UPS broke the chrome strips that I had done for the luggage rack for my Essex. They delivered the box while I was at work. My wife hid in another room when I got home! I called UPS to report the damage, they sent a guy out. He says,"We'll just have you order new parts and we will pay for them." When I explained how rare those pieces were,he then told me I could try to have them fixed. Sent them back to the plating company, where they did a great job mending the strips, most of them broken in half. UPS had to foot the bill (and a VERY hefty one from the plating company)

INSIST they pay Steve for ALL his EXTRA time!

This is one other thing that pisses me off about UPS.

Say you ship and item, they damage it along the way, they even go as far as putting a sticker on the damaged item basically saying we broke it and here u go.

If you do not have insurance on the item the wont do anything.

How can a company get away with that and still stay in business?

**anyway, i feel better now. ha

How about a combination UPS & eBay story?

About 4 years ago, I bought some fog lights thru eBay - Paid the seller (less than $50), who wanted to charge me insurance on the package, plus shipping. Told the seller that UPS automatically insures packages under $100 and that it is included in the price.

    Package got lost...

Shipper/Seller put in for the insurance, got the money from UPS, and I got nothing because I had not elected to take the seller's 'insurance'.

UPS said it paid the seller, and would not do anything more.

eBay would not do anything (was about 4 years ago), as they followed the seller's logic (?)...

Seller got my money for the item, and the UPS insurance - which I paid for when I paid for shipping!

And the 'frosting on the cake' was a NEGATIVE RATING from the seller, because I gave him a hard time about it all!

Wow UPS stories have to say I hate UPS as a shipper. I had some Hudson radios coming to me from Texas. Shipper sent me the tracking number so I was checking for the time it would come to be there to receive it.

So UPS site says its on truck for delivery. So I grab my laptop and sit in living room with clear view of walkway. Its winter so I had cleared the walk just to be sure he would not fall. So I see the truck roll up and he is sitting in it across the road. I am yippee my stuff is here. Guy does not get out of truck just drives away. I am WTF. I go online the site it updated and says "Rang door bell, nobody home" now I am pissed. I phone UPS get a drone who tells me I am not home. I said I have been home all day I want to speak to supervisor now. He gets on and I tell him story even give him number from side of truck. Tell I am going over him unless that package arrives today. I had paid for 3 day shipping. He says he will investigate. 5 mins later the same truck arrives at my door and the driver is pissed. He goes off on me saying he did not stop because my walk ways were not ALL cleared down to concrete. I said this main walkway is, are you planning on walking my property? I then go off on him in a colourful and loving way. He leaves pissed I am pissed.

I think I am done with him. 2 days later a city employee arrives at my door telling me they have had a serious complaint about dangerous sidewalks and I need to clear my walks down to concrete. Which here in Canada is near impossible in winter. I clear them down to safe walking as does all my neighbours. She agrees and I also tell her I know who called you and explain my story. She logs it tells me if he calls again she will log it and call me.

Next week she comes back saying she got another complaint from same source as they log all calls. My walks are clear this guy is driving by and calling complaining. So I file a complaint with the city stating I am being harassed they say he phones again they will help me file a complaint with UPS.

To make this story better I had another delivery from UPS coming for my wife (I refuse to use UPS now) and I was waiting for the bastard this time. He pulls up like before I open the door and meet him at the truck. He is looking worried I accept package and then explain to him I have talked to city about his calls had him tagged as nuisance and my next step is to call his supervisor with my lawyers and sue him and UPS for harassment. Needless to say I never heard another thing from the city complaining about my walks.

He still delivers but like schillaz he does an Olympic sprint to the door to leave it without ringing so he does not have to talk to me. And don't even get me started on how those bastards gouge Canadians for duty and taxes. They charge us $50 to process the form even if duty is $3. Like I said I refuse to buy from anyone who only ships UPS.

Have recently heard some disturbing stories about UPS- apparently some dissidence in the ranks, resulting in intentional damage to packages, etc.- USPS and FedEx are better choices, at present, from what I understand.

If it was insured with UPS and UPS is paying the claim, they are not going to pay the full claim and send back the parts to the shipper. If they pay the claim, they are going to keep the remaining parts as they essentially just bought them. In regard to the carbs, they usually keep 'overgoods' in the center where they turn up for a couple of days before sending them to the regional overgoods location. If they repackaged it, it should be recorded in their system where they did and hopefully that is where the carbs would also turn up (a call should be made to that building specifically). I cannot imagine shipping carbs together in a box with a manifold. There just wouldn't be a good way to 'snug' it all up so one wouldn't mangle the other.
Never had a problem with UPS, but I always ship items in a box, inside another box and packaged so they would not get damaged if it were dropped from three feet. Three feet is the height of the most of their converyors.

My kid worked for UPS years ago when he was going to college. They were supposed to unload trucks from top to bottom in an orderly fashion. Well the supervisor always complained they were too slow and insisted on speeding up the process. The only way to do that was to yank the whole wall of goods so most of it fell on the conveyor, hence banging most of the boxes on the way down, No matter how well there packaged, damage will occur.

I use USPS priority for smaller items up to 70 lbs (I think that is the limit) if needs be I can ship by Greyhound or DHL.

I use usps priority for small items and only FedEx for larger stuff. I closed my UPS account 3 years ago after they started leaving packages outside my gate at 8:pm for me to find the next morning. The icing on the cake was a UPS delivery guy dumping an NOS studebaker axle over the fence with the splined end buried in the dirt. And then another package was tracked as "delivered" and was not. He was in a hurry and just scanned the package in and never came by. I was at the location at the "delivered" time and would have seen any vehicle come by and stop.
I opened up a FedEx account on line and have used them ever since. Any time I can get a company that is shipping to me, to use FedEx or usps and not UPS, I do it.

I cannot argue with all the previous complaints re UPS, but my personal experience with USPS and FEDEX has been so bad I actually opt for UPS whenever possible. I've had more broken/bent/smashed items in 'Priority Mail' boxes than any other. I cringe when I see the USPS box arrive. Broken bezels, bent door sills, etc. So, it sounds like 'individual experiences will vary' but for now I'm sticking with UPS.

When I buy something from ebay or any company, I always tell them not to ship UPS/OOPS. If they tell me that's all they use I tell them to cancel my order! I will NOT use ups for any reason, period!

I make my living selling vintage auto parts, I used to use UPS for anything bigger than a bread box, about 4 years ago, about 1/4 of the things I sent were getting damaged,I tried to work with them at 1st, but no matter how "bullet proof" I boxed the items, they would not honor the insurance and say "it was not packaged correctly", some items I had actually made boxes from 1/4" plywood that were destroyed, but I did not package correctly??? I have talked with Jeff my local driver (very nice guy) and he is as confused as me..then about a year ago, they raised there home pick up fee from $3.00 for however many items I had to like $4.55 per item, talked to Jeff again, said you go right by at 5PM every day, can I put a pop can on the mail box if I have something to pick up? He told me they have been told "YOU WILL BE FIRED IF RULES ARE NOT FOLLOWED"...I can hand my item to a driver if I see them in town for free, but they refuse to stop if I do not pay the ridiculous fee??? Not using UPS any more, but still say HI to Jeff when I see him at the post office..

Threatening to contact your lawyer is a great tactic. For about 6 or 8 months after I moved into my home here in Memphis I was getting phone calls from what turned out to be collection agencies looking for people who previously lived in the house. I would patiently explain to the caller that "No, Fred Brown (Michelle whats-her-name, Dan Brown - take your pick) no longer lives here". When the 3rd call would come in from the same caller (caller ID is great!!!) I would inform the caller that if they called again I would be contacting my lawyer to start procedures for harassment. The calls stopped - I haven't gotten any calls for these people in months now.

It also worked on AT&T - they kept calling me wanting to sell me this great phone/internet combo package for such and such a month (for 6 months or a year). I said no, they kept calling - until again I threatened them with a harrasment lawsuit (also told them that because of the constant calling I wouldn't take their program if it was the only one around) and they could take it up with my attorney. End of calls.

About three years ago, I bought a pair of rocker stainless ('51 Hornet) off of ebay. They were straight in the pictures. When I received them from UPS, they must have thought that they were too long, as they had bent the cardboard tube in half.
