Having never done this before I am having a heck of a time trying to install the metal glass seat on to the bottom of the door glass with the rubber piece involved. Is it better to slide the rubber on to the glass then fit the metal glass seat over it or install the rubber in the glass seat then try to slide them onto the glass? What about using a lubricant such as dish soap to help the process?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

when my glass guy did it he put the rubber on the glass first. Then lard on the rubber and the metal bracket. He then took a rubber mallet and gave it some good wacks. The glass was on end and on a padded bench but he hit the thing hard. i was very shocked it was not in many little pieces but he did the job of all 8 windows in my 53 4 door (counting the vent windows in under 30 mins.

Thanks Jay. Do you recall if he used any kind of adhesive to secure the rubber to the glass or the subber to the metal glass seat?

I did mine much the same way but I did not use lard. I used dish soap and put it in the bottom of the rail and rubbed it lightly on the rubber that was over the glass. I used a leather mallet and had the window metal runner in a vice. I started at the front end of the metal to window and worked my way back. Washed it off good with water and set it aside to dry for a few days. Did not do my wind wings that way. Just hand forced them into place.

Buy the correct rubber, soak it in kerosene and it will go soft and easy to install. Regards, Barry

Did not. Figured that it was in there tight enough that it would not need it. Also when it dries completely out and the rubber melts or sweats into shape and form it is not needed. What I like to call force to fit-paint to match...

Sometimes the glass likes to rock up and down from side to side and not stay seated. After I get it set, I wrap duck tape around the glass and track on each side and allow it to rest one night. It allows the rubber to tighten

As far as adhesive I use 3M black weatherstripping

Great ideas... Lard, dish soap, kerosene, great for setting windows and getting rid of ticks on a dog!
