1953 F600, 239 flathead
-
I have a 1953 Ford F-600 cab&chassis with the 239 Flathead. It ran when parked 11 years ago, but naturally, it won't even try now. I haven't touched it at all, but I am planning to start work soon. Any tips on how to get it running? As far as I know, it was filled with antifreeze 11 years ago, so the engine shouldn't have frozen at all (the worst winter we had was in 2004, so its only been through one really bad winter). This truck was purchased by my father in 1998, and parked in 1999. He was going to rebuild it, but he's gone now. Its a big deal for me to rebuild it. So, any tips or help would be really useful.

Pull the plugs, put Marvel Mystery Oil in cylinders then crank engine to disperse oil up and down cyl walls. Change crancase oil check for spark, crank engine with coil wire pulled out till you get an indication of oil pressure on the guage, plug in coil wire and try to start. You'll get lots of smoke out the exhaust for a little while, but if engines O.K. it'll subside. Good luck.

And watch closely for leaks, be sure you have coolant in the engine, oil and a fire extinguisher handy just in case.
