1965 catalina 2 + 2 transmission type?
-
I recently found a '65 Catalina 2+2 convertible for sale. It has an auto trans, and the owner tells me it's the original TH400.......problem is, I have found online info that states that the TH400 was not avail until '66 and that the car would have had the older type hydramatic installed at the factory.
Can anyone provide any insight on this? -
According to my materials, the TH400 came out in 1965.
Prior to that was the Roto Hydromatic.
What kind of condition is this car in?
Do you know what options are on it?
I remember working on and driving 2+2's back in 1966 when I worked for a Pontiac dealer. They were great cars.

Well, i haven't seen it yet but this is what the owner told me:
solid frame, trunk rust but sfc only, not rusted through, needs a pass rear flr pan, 421 4 bbl, ps,pb,pw,tach, console AT,pwr seat, light package, pwr top, pwr antenna,r speaker, am/fm radio. decent interior, frt fenders have some rust but he has 2 nice new mexico fenders to go with, has a repl rear panel (the one between the taillights as the one on it has a dent in it). car is complete and unmolested, in his words, needs a conv top but the top goes up and own good. car runs rough, he thinks it needs a tune-up (i read this as i may have a bad cyl or two). car has 94K on it. he wants $6500 but told me he needs to sell it so he is flexible. black interior, body is maroon now but originally was a cream or pale yellow color with a blk top.
What do you think......if it is as he described it....fair price or no? definitely taking a chance with the poss of a bad cylinder. i'm interested in only making a driver right now. -
i should note that i am going to try and look at it tomorrow....

Definitely a TH400, it actually came out during 64 and was used in Cadillacs and Buicks.

I'm always leary of a sellers opinion of what the car looks like and the extent of any damage or rust. Light surface rust is what? I have looked at cars that the owner has said the car was in decentt shape and after looking at it, I found it to be a total rot box. Caveat Emptor
I always get a charge out of people when they have a ruff running engine and say "It just needs a Tune-Up" it's like the guy with a damaged fender saying "That will buff right out"
Sounds like the car was painted Mayfair Maize originally. It was a popular color.
I worked for Montclair Pontiac in Chicago in the mid 60's and drove some 2+2's. I liked the big Pontiacs. They were confortable and classy.
There were 3 - 421's for that year. Check the block on the passenger side front for the markings WG/YH = 421/338 HP, YJ/WH = 421/356 HP Tri-Power, WJ/YK = 421/376 Tri-Power.
$6500.00 seems a bit high in my opinion for a car that needs a lot of work body wise and maybe engine wise. Be sure to check the underside, rockers, trunk floor extentions and the well where the top folds into for rust and damage real good.
Take pictures and get all the numbers from the V.I.N. and body plate. I think you can still get a lot of information from the Pontiac Historical Society.
Best of luck and keep us posted.

JUst got back maybe an hour ago.........took a bunch pf pics. car is complete but has been sitting outside with the top about goen for 4-5 years...i won't even go into a diatrabe on that.
I checked the engine vin - codes YH with a 6 digit code after it that matches the eng code on the protect-o-plate, so i'm comfy it's original. tranny does not look like its ever been out of the car. the doors are somewhat stripped - like the panels and window motors are out and lying in the trunk. interior-wise it needs carpet and with a good clean-up can possibly be used in driver condition. needs a top but it does work and the frame appears to be straight. sheetmetal needed is frt fenders, trunk pan and rear floor pan, basically the section under the rear seat. the rest looks ok from the bottom of the car but who know what it looks like under the rug. doors are decent, mostly sfc stuff. qtrs are decent too, prob just need lower patch panels on them. car was painted blue over the maize then maroon over the blue. chrome and trim mostly all needs redone to be nice. i could not find the axle code but it has an old tag on it that says "use limited slip diff lube only", so it's a posi, i assume(?) The frame is in very nice shape....just soem sfc scale starting, so no problems there. Of course, the body would still have to maybe coem off with the trunk/floor work that is needed.
From the way he spoke i'm sure I can get it somewhat cheaper.....good chance of $5500 if i called him and told him the cash was ready and waiting, possibly even $5000. Also, he has a registratino from NY that is signed by the prev owner, and according to him that is the title and it's transferable. I know some states do that now but i'd have to be sure that Penndot would accept it and issues me a title as we still do that for older cars in PA.
One other concern I did have is that the rear of the frt fenders....cannot see how bad it is on the main body where they bolt on....could be decent or could end up needing pieces welded in from a parts car. No way to know until you get the fenders off.
I'll try to upload the pics tomorrow and post the link.
