318 available in a 1970 challenger r/t convertible
-
Was a 318 motor available in the 1970 dodge challenger R/T convertible? And if so how can I tell if the car is a true R/T?
-
I cannot find anything saying the 318 was available in a 1970 Challenger R/T, convertible or hardtop. The base engine was the 383 and the optional engines were the 375hp 4-barrel 440, the 390hp three-two-barrelled 440, and the 426 Hemi. I know you should never say the factory never produced a particular car but I would have to have all kinds of paperwork to prove a '70 Challenger R/T with a 318 was a legit factory car.

383 HP was base engine in 70 RT Challengers, with 440-4 BBL, 4406Pac and 426 Hemi being options, no 318 or even 340 RTs, Challenger vin starts with a J , second letter would be S if its an RT so vin would be JS23 for coupe JS27 for converts and JS29 for RT-SE coupe , fifth digit is engine code 383 HP is N ,440 4BBL is U ,440-6BBL is V and Hemi is R, sixth digit is 0 for year 0 being 1970 , seventh digit is manufacturing plant such E or others. in 1971 the 340 became the base RT engine.non RT vin starts JH---

Jh27g0b. Is the beginning VIN

Absolutely, positively NO 318 R/T Challengers, period, dot. That, you can take to the bank. The R/T was the performance version of the Challenger, not the pedestrian version. The engine possibilities are stated above."The time has come", the Walrus said, "to speak of many things. Of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings. And why the sea is boiling hot,
And whether pigs have wings..."
